Following the likes of Saved by the Bell and Gilmore Girls getting revivals, fans of Dawson's Creek have wondered if, following the reunion and photoshoot for Entertainment Weekly, something like that could be a possibility for the Capeside adults. While the show ended after six seasons with everyone in different places, it still holds a fond spot in the hearts of fans. However, while a revival is still yet to be announced, if Katie Holmes doesn't return as Joey, there's no way it can happen.

Speaking to Fitzy and Wippa, Holmes admitted she wasn't sure if a revival would ever happen, leaving fans to wonder if the actress would be open to returning as Joey. Admittedly, it's hard to trudge up the past without a mainstay of the series. Dawson's Creek was as much Joey's story as it was Dawson's, especially since they were tethered as soulmates in the show, even if they didn't end up together.

Without Joey, Dawson's journey as a filmmaker in Hollywood and the next Steven Spielberg feels short-sold as she was his primary motivator and key inspiration. Plus, it's tough to have Pacey without her because she chose him and they moved to New York together, with showrunner Kevin Williamson even admitting in the past he felt they'd have kids by now. Fans need to see Joey in her family element because it was something she didn't experience as her mom died before the series started. She also had a turbulent relationship with her drug-dealing dad, Mike, so all this needs closure as she erases the mistakes her family made to finish her arc.

A revival can't just have Dawson and Pacey reconnecting without mentioning Joey. There may not be tension anymore between the two, but she links them, forming one of pop culture's most iconic trifectas. She pushed Pacey as a man and in his career, so his epilogue without her wouldn't be the same. It would be just as bland as Dawson's, who spent so many nights with her watching movies and dreaming big.

To put it simply, Joey's important to all of the core cast, even Grams, who grew from frowning upon her closeness to Dawson to embracing a young woman fighting against the world. Joey's a common denominator in everyone's lives, and despite her sassy attitude, without her, their endings would feel incomplete.

Dawson's Creek, created by Kevin Williamson, stars James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams. The entire series is now available for streaming on Netflix.
