David Fincher Offers An Update On The Goon Adaptation

It’s hard not to like Eric Powell’s comic book series The Goon. You’ve got zombies and guns, and a pie-eating skunk-ape. And a quest to find naked pictures of Ingrid Bergman. If that doesn’t scream “top-shelf entertainment” to you then we’re clearly not operating on the same wavelength.

There’s been talk for awhile now of The Goon getting the animated movie treatment. David Fincher is spearheading the development with Blur Studios, and they’ve got Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown attached as the lead voices. If all of this sounds familiar to you, it might be because you saw the awesome teaser clip released over the summer at San Diego Comic-Con.

Fincher recently sat down to chat about The Social Network with AICN and he gave the geek-friendly website an update on what’s been happening with The Goon. “Animation that isn’t singing furry animals is hard. Especially something as outré as Eric Powell,” he said. “And it’s his script! It’s main-lined Eric Powell. We kind of went out with it at the end of the year and I don’t know that a lot of people were paying attention, but hopefully someone will step in and want to [pick it up].”

Fincher chalks up some of the trouble he and his partners have faced to a misconception about what The Goon really is. “I gotta hope there are more avenues for animation than– I certainly wouldn’t call The Goon ‘adult animation.’ I think that ends up starting to sound like Fritz The Cat and that’s not what it is. It’s more like ‘teen animation.’ And it’s funny!”

Funding remains the key obstacle to overcome. “Hopefully this will be the year that people go, ‘Wait a minute! We don’t all have to be trying to imitate Pixar!'” I hope so too. Though if any of you happen to have a spare $55 million lying around, it sounds like Fincher intends to give it a good home.
