James Gunn might be busy setting up the next phase of the DC Universe as the new co-head of DC Studios but, according to David Ayer, that hasn't stopped him from addressing the "Ayer Cut" of Suicide Squad. On Twitter, a Spanish-speaking fan expressed doubt that the Ayer Cut would ever be released under Gunn's leadership. Ayer put out a Spanish tweet of his own in response. When translated to English, it reads as follows: "I spoke to him a while ago. All with patience. He has the right to put together his new universe before visiting the past. Cheer up. Good things are coming."RELATED: Why James Gunn Finally Took on Superman After Turning Down DC's First Offer

Ayer has been vocal about his director's cut of Suicide Squad ever since since the 2016 theatrical cut of the DC Extended Universe film was received poorly critics and audiences alike. Suicide Squad notoriously went through multiple reshoots and cuts, with Warner Bros. demanding significant changes to the tone and style of Ayer's film. Among the elements removed were a romantic subplot between Will Smith's Deadshot and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and the majority of Jared Leto's performance as the Joker.

When the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut fan campaign successfully resulted in the release of Zack Snyder's director's cut of 2017's Justice League, fans began rallying around the release of the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad by starting the #ReleaseTheAyerCut campaign. Despite a very vocal outcry, nothing has come of the campaign to date, but that hasn't stopped Ayer from teasing that his director's cut is "vastly better" than the theatrical version. In a response to aother fan on Twitter, Ayer said, "The nature of the film was fundamentally changed. I'm looking you in the eye and telling you this. My cut is vastly better."

David Ayer and James Gunn Share Mutual Respect

Gunn has previously acknowledged the #ReleaseTheAyerCut campaign by making it clear that he and his co-CEO, Peter Safran, are mindful of the fans and their desires for what comes next for DC. At the same time, looking to the past might not be in the cards because the duo is focused on the new DCU and mapping out plans for the future.

Following the appointment of Gunn and Safran as the joint bosses of DC Studios, Ayer had nothing but nice things to say about the fellow filmmaker. Gunn helmed the 2021 standalone sequel The Suicide Squad and Ayer made it clear there was no bad blood between them "[Gunn's] always been a good guy. [He] has been incredibly respectful to me," Ayer said. "As far as my cut -- Of course I want it seen. And I believe there's a real shot at it. It just won't be tomorrow." The feeling of respect appears to be mutual, with Ayer getting a "special thanks" credit in Gunn's The Suicide Squad.
