Dave Filoni's upcoming Star Wars crossover movie will adapt Heir to the Empire, if a new rumor is to be believed.The rumor comes via MyTimeToShineHello, a Twitter user with an established track record when it comes to Star Wars scoops. It claims that Filoni's as-yet-unnamed big screen project is titled "Star Wars: Heir to the Empire." If true, this would presumably mean that the film will take at least some inspiration from Timothy Zahn's 1991 Star Wars Legends novel of the same name, which (along with its two sequels) pits the fledging New Republic against the Imperial remnant led by Grand Admiral Thrawn. However, as Lucasfilm is yet to officially confirm that Filoni's Star Wars movie is indeed an Heir to the Empire adaptation, any buzz to that effect should be taken with a grain of salt for now.
That said, Filoni has shown a willingness to incorporate elements of Star Wars Legends continuity into the franchise's revised, Disney-era continuity. Notably, he oversaw the re-introduction of Thrawn in mid-2010s animated series Star Wars Rebels and is likewise responsible for the fan-favorite villain's live-action debut in the forthcoming Disney+ series Ahsoka. Filoni indicated his penchant for reviving Star Wars Legends heroes and villains could also carry over to his Star Wars movie during a recent interview, provided he can find a place for them within the film's story. "I think one thing we're in agreement about [at Lucasfilm] is that the characters -- as special as they are -- the story has to drive what characters are," he said.

Filoni will seemingly have his work cut out for him trying to make room for any additional characters in his Star Wars film, given its potentially packed roster. Lucasfilm previously described the project as the "culmination" of the overarching narrative of Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Skeleton Crew, which suggests it will involve at least some of the protagonists and antagonists from each of those shows. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has since hinted Filoni's Star Wars crossover movie will tie up storylines from Rebels and its predecessor Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as well.
That's a lot of storytelling plates to keep spinning, however, Filoni recently insisted that Star Wars movies should tell "big" stories that warrant the big screen treatment. "You’re looking for those moments that define an era, and that’s what the films really should be about -- whether it's characters coming together, or a defining moment," he said.
Dave Filoni's untitled Star Wars movie does not yet have a release date.
