Guardians of the Galaxy actor Dave Bautista recently revealed that there were plans at one point to develop a spinoff film centered on Drax and Mantis.

"There were talks for a while about a Drax and Mantis film," Bautista told Digital Spy magazine. "It was really because it was James Gunn's idea."

He added that Gunn "really wanted to do a Drax and Mantis film," noting, "He laid it out to me." While the actor admitted that Gunn's idea for the spinoff film was "a brilliant idea," he also shared that he hasn't received any follow-up from the studio.

"I don't think they're very interested, or it doesn't fit into the way they have things mapped out," Bautista explained while discussing the future of his character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "But other than that, no. I mean, as far as my obligations, I've got Guardians 3, and that's probably going to be the end of Drax."

Bautista has portrayed Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Meanwhile, Pom Klementieff has starred as Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

The actor's comments came about a week after James Gunn revealed how much time elapsed between his firing from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and being hired to helm the DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad.

"It happened immediately," Gunn said at the time. "We started talking about what the project would be. The first thing that was brought up was Superman, but I didn't know if I wanted to do that."

Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in July 2018, after old jokes about rape and pedophilia from his defunct website were reposted on Twitter. Disney eventually brought Gunn back to direct the third Guardians of the Galaxy installment, which is now in pre-production.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to begin filming this year and hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
