The Goonies star Ke Huy Quan returns to the set of the film's pirate ship scene.

Quan, who played Richard "Data" Wang in the 1985 film, took to Instagram after returning to the film's set. "First time back to Warner Brothers' stage 16 in 36 years," Quan said. "This stage is where we filmed the pirate ship scene in The Goonies. I got a bit emotional as all my wonderful memories of my Goonies Gang came flooding back." The 51-year-old actor continued by revealing the floor of the stage "goes down 40 ft. deep."

The Goonies, a 1980s Cult Classic

Rumors of a potential remake of The Goonies have been circulating for years, but Corey Feldman, who played Clark "Mouth" Devereaux, expressed his strong opposition to the possibility. "Let's hope not," Feldman said. "Those remakes, they ruin everything." The Stand By Me actor said he wishes The Goonies could receive a sequel like Top Gun: Maverick, not a remake like Ghostbusters. In 2014, The Goonies' director, Richard Donner, confirmed an in-development sequel. Tragically, Donner passed away in 2021.

Released in 1985, The Goonies follows a group of kids living in the "Goon Docks" who encounter an old treasure map. The treasure map takes them on an adventure to discover the fortune of a 17th-century pirate named One-Eyed Willy, which could save their homes from foreclosure. However, the Fratelli family is also greedy for some pirate loot and attempts to thwart the kids' plans.

Before playing Data in The Goonies, Quan starred as Short Round, Indiana Jones' sidekick, in Temple of Doom. At Disney's D23 Expo, Quan reunited with Harrison Ford, 38 years after the film premiered. "He's one of the generous actors I've ever met and because it was my first time [acting], he was constantly behind the camera helping Steven get that performance out of me," Quan recalled about Ford. Additionally, the Star Wars actor even taught Quan how to swim.

In the years since The Goonies, Quan struggled to find acting work as an adult. Inspired by the success of Crazy Rich Asians, the 51-year-old actor gave the film industry another shot and landed a role in Daniel Kwan's 2022 film, Everything Everywhere All at Once. Additionally, Quan joined the second season of Loki and the upcoming Disney+ series American Born Chinese with his former co-star, Michelle Yeoh.

American Born Chinese and Loki Season 2 premieres on announced dates in 2023 on Disney+. Loki Season 1 is available to stream on Disney+. Indiana Jones 5 arrives in theaters on June 30, 2023.
