WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: Visions Episode 1 and 3, “The Duel” and “The Twins." Both are streaming now on Disney+.

So much of Star Wars has become iconic over the years. Almost anyone would recognize the opening crawl, John Williams’ score or Princess Leia’s hairdo. However, there is one thing arguably more iconic than any of those things -- the lightsaber. Ever since Obi-Wan gave the Skywalker legacy lightsaber to Luke in A New Hope, the weapon has only grown in popularity with young and old fans alike. And just like how the weapon’s popularity has grown, so too has the multitude of lightsaber designs. However, Star Wars: Visions just debuted two new sabers that are by far the most unique kyber-powered weapons of all time -- even if certain Sith might think otherwise.

Unique Lightsabers in Star Wars History

The Grand Inquisitor's (Spinning) Lightsaber

The original trilogy didn’t expand much on the idea of the lightsaber, but The Phantom Menace did. Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber -- although that was not the variation’s first appearance -- became popular with fans and was the most unique lightsaber in years. Another odd saber introduced during the prequels was Count Dooku’s weapon, which sported a curved hilt to gain a leverage advantage for its wielder.

Kylo Ren’s lightsaber -- with all of its meme-inspiring, cross-guarding glory -- was introduced in The Force Awakens. Although a canonical reason (venting for the cracked Kyber crystal) was given for the crossguard, it was mostly added for the sake of aesthetics. However, the most original lightsaber to date came in Star Wars Rebels with the Inquisitors’ lightsabers. They all used a double-bladed lightsaber like Darth Maul's, but the hilt rotated, causing the lightsaber to spin. The primary reason for that saber design was shock and awe for the few Jedi that were alive in that time period.

Star Wars: Visions The Duel

Star Wars: Visions’ Episode 1, “The Duel,” started the series off with a lot of excitement. The story featured a group of bandits that came to loot a village. The village’s guard would have successfully fended them off; however, the bandits’ leader was a Sith. She pulled out her lightsaber, and it was something that had never been seen before.

It looked like a staff, but an attachment that allowed eight lightsabers to immerge from the end at a 90-degree angle and rotate like an Inquisitor’s lightsaber. It kind of looked like an umbrella and provided an effective shield from blaster fire. Multiple blades could be dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced user, but in the hands of this Sith, it was a multi-pronged killing machine. Unfortunately, the Sith met a quick demise when a Sith hunter showed up to save the village from its imminent destruction.

Visions The Twins Lightsaber fight

Episode 3 of Star Wars: Visions also added one of the most original weapons in all of Star Wars. Kyber crystals have been used to power all kinds of lightsabers before, but in “The Twins,” a large Kyber crystal powered one of the twins’ suits of armor. With refined kyber energy, the armor enhanced the wearer’s Force abilities. However, when the Sith put the kyber directly into her armor, its raw power allowed her armor to generate multiple lightsabers and be nearly unstoppable.

The two new weapons are cool concepts, but a lot of Sith would probably see it as overkill. For example, in 2015's Star Wars #14, Darth Vader said that Sith only need one lightsaber because the dark side should be power enough. He probably would have felt like flashy armor, multiple lightsabers and unnecessary kyber energy would have been, at least, cheating or, at worst, not having faith in the dark side. Regardless of Vader’s minimalist opinions, Visions' weapons have pretty cool designs.

To Star Wars: Visions' novel weapons, all nine episodes are available to stream on Disney+ now.
