Disney+ gives 1984's Splash a 4K upgrade with an uncensored "nude" scene fully restored.

Following the film's initial launch on Disney+ in 2020, the streamer had taken director Ron Howard's hit fantasy romantic comedy and censored a famous beach scene with Daryl Hannah's exposed backside by adding CGI hair extensions. At the time, fans of the film and Disney+ viewers questioned the awkward censoring and whether the decision was necessary since there was not much nudity shown in the original cut. Now, with the addition of the Disney+ parental lock feature, Splash's CGI cover-up has been removed and the original version reinstated.

This is not the first time Disney+ has been questioned for censoring certain films. In 2020, fans of the series Wizards of Waverly Place noticed that Disney had blurred the cleavage of actor Maria Canals-Barrera in one episode. Additionally, The Simpsons excluded the Michael Jackson-starring episode "Stark Raving Dad," as well as its only TV-MA-rated episode, "The Wreck of the Relationship," which had a censored moment with an elderly dominatrix giving the middle finger to the camera. Fans also noticed in January that Disney+ had edited out an iconic line from the 1987 teen comedy Adventures in Babysitting, wherein Elisabeth Shue's character drops an f-bomb, saying, "Don't fuck with the babysitter."

Released in 1984, Splash was Disney's first PG-rated film under the Touchstone Pictures banner, which released more mature movies without the Disney brand name in the title. Splash stars Tom Hanks as a lovesick young man in New York City who falls in love with a mystery woman, played by Hannah, who happens to be a mermaid. Produced on a small budget of $11 million, Splash earned positive reviews and became the tenth highest-grossing film of 1984. The film also starred John Candy and Eugene Levy. A sequel titled Splash, Too was released as a made-for-TV movie for the ABC network in 1988 and did not feature any of the original stars.

Disney+ re-evaluated its parental controls after the streamer acquired Netflix's adult-oriented Marvel dramas, which included TV-MA-rated shows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher. The update was instilled on the service in March, which prompted users to update their parental control settings. This included an option for content rating restrictions and the ability to add a PIN lock for certain profiles.
