The following article contains spoilers from DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #1, on sale now.

Mister Miracle may have ended up trading one tragedy for another. After successfully restoring their infected friends in DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #1 (by Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Andy Lanning, Rain Beredo, and Saida Temofonte), Mister Miracle and Big Barda left the Justice League to go reunite with their son, Jacob. The only problem with this is that in all likelihood, Jacob has been infected by the Anti-life virus.

Mister Miracle left his son on New Genesis, believing the boy would be safe there. Unbeknownst to anyone, Darkseid arrived at some point and infected the entire planet. Interestingly, this means that he accomplished a mission he began not too long ago: to claim Jacob Free for himself.

Mister Miracle and Big Barda Go Back to Their Son

This strange obsession with the child of Mister Miracle and Big Barda began not here but in the pages of Tom King and Mitch Gerads' Mister Miracle run. In order to prevent the war from going any further between Apokolips and New Genesis, Darkseid offered that his side would completely surrender, if and only if Jacob was given to him. His motivation for wanting Jacob is still largely unknown, though one theory could explain his obsession, and spell doom for the heroes of this alternate universe.

As the son of Mister Miracle and Big Barda, Jacob is something unique: the offspring of the two different branches of New Gods. Though still a child, his potential power is largely unknown. He hasn't demonstrated any substantial abilities, but considering who his parents are, it seems unlikely that Jacob would be ordinary. Darkseid likely would have tried to break Jacob down and train him as an obedient slave, much like he tried with Mister Miracle.

Unfortunately, it seems that he's succeeded after all. New Genesis has clearly fallen to the Anti-Life virus, as beings like Highfather and Orion have been confirmed among the infected. Considering his proximity to them at the time of his father's departure, Jacob was likely infected as well. Even if he managed to escape, it's hard to imagine a child outrunning the infected gods for long.

DCeased New Genesis New Gods Defeated

If so, then Mister Miracle just traded one tragedy for another. The only reason he left New Genesis was to find a way to restore Big Barda and reunite their family. In trying to get his wife back, he may have lost his son. Even worse, assuming that the potential power Jacob wields is there, then the forces of the dead just gained a powerful new weapon alongside Supergirl.

Still, there is some hope. Though his parents may be devastated if it turns out he was turned, they now know how to engineer a cure, they just have to find him first. Of course, the possibility exists that Jacob is still alive and free. He wasn't shown in the issue at all, implying that his fate is going to be a plot point for his parents in the future. He may be alive or dead, but if this particular saga has taught readers anything, it is that hope persists even in the darkest moments.
