Of the many books that Stephen King has written, many consider The Dark Tower to be his magnum opus. The book series focuses on the last of the gunslingers, Roland Deschain, as he approaches the titular tower while hunting the malevolent Man in Black.

Several attempts have been made to adapt the book series, including an ill-fated film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. A TV series was in the works at Amazon but ultimately fell through. The streamer chose to cancel the project in early 2020, citing budgetary issues and conflicting programs But Glen Mazzara, who would have acted as showrunner on the TV series, has a detailed vision of what the show would have looked like.

Mazzara told The Kingcast podcast that the series would have been based on the fourth book, Wizard and Glass, which focuses on Roland's time as a youth. His TV series would have essentially acted as a prequel to the movie. "I was actually thankful that someone made that movie, believe it or not, because, I think that movie...was exactly what I said not to do in my initial pitch," he said.  "It was about the Dark Tower. My plan was not to mention the Dark Tower, not to explain there was a Dark Tower. I wanted Roland to find the dark tower as he finds it in [the books]."

Mazzara also said that he planned to age Roland up by the beginning of the potential third season and then cover the first two books in the series, The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three.
