The third Dark Souls game provides players with plenty to explore with items and enemies scattered just about everywhere in each area. Boss arenas can be enormous in size and atmosphere, while some others feel cramped and cluttered. The game features many hard to traverse paths to get to each boss and often times it's these areas and the enemies in them that players will struggle with rather than the boss themselves, but there are a few places that are worth the trouble.

A selection of areas within DS3 have scenery worth screenshotting and items worth any hassle to get to, but there are also some areas in the game that are more trouble than they're worth. From areas full of frustrating enemies and traps to areas full of intrigue and fun encounters, there is a lot DS3 has to offer.

10 Best: Anor Londo Is A Nostalgia Trip

Dark Souls 3 Anor Londo

The entire way up to the elevator that leads to Anor Londo has a feeling of familiarity as players reach the rotating switch to carry themselves up. Exploring the rotating bridge back up to a large staircase and a bonfire is one of the best nostalgia trips in the game. Exploring the surrounding area reveals the fate of the Giant Blacksmith from DS1, where the soul for Giant's Coal is left behind.

The area where the boss fight against Ornstein and Smough as well as the loft where Gwynevere gave players the Lordvessel are all found here as well. Aldrich may be a frustrating boss fight, but this piece of a once Painting Guardian-filled location is well worth the headache.

9 Worst: Cathedral Of The Deep Is A Slog To Get Through

Dark Souls 3 Cathedral Of The Deep

Just on the way to the Cathedral is every annoying enemy met up to that point in the game. The dogs are particularly bad as they teleport on top of players, but then the exploding hollows are thrown in by the doors as well. On the path to Deacons, players encounter infinitely spawning skeletons which are fairly easy to handle, but it's the ones with a giant creature coming out of their torso that's the bane of many player's existences.

It infects characters with grubs that leech off and cause bleed build-up. Even if players are prepared with a Torch to get them off, Grave Wardens cause bleed as well. The Giants, Thralls, and Cathedral Knights add to this endless onslaught just to get the boss and the Patches encounter solidifies this as one of the worst areas in the game.

8 Best: Catacombs Of Carthus Is The Right Level Of Dangerous

Dark Souls 3 High Lord Wolnir

The biggest obstacle in the Catacombs are the giant rolling balls but they can easily be destroyed after killing the mage skeleton controlling them. The Carthus Rings are also found in this area, as well as some ashes that allow the use of buying Carthus Rogue Resin or "bleed" resin from the Shrine Maiden.

The traps can be used against the enemies found there, and even the ball can be used to the player's advantage to get easy kills. The part of the Catacombs that pushes it to the top, however, is the bridge. Spawning dozens of skeletons, the bridge stands between the player and Wolnir, and after crossing it, the player can hit the post to knock the entire thing down along with every skeleton on it.

7 Worst: Irithyll Of The Boreal Valley Is Relentless

Dark Souls 3 Sulyvahn Beast

Death by a Sulyvahn Beast is usually what greets players who didn't kill the Deacons of the Deep before getting to this area. Although the beast drops a very powerful ring, the fight with it can take many tries, especially for players who have slow weapons. Pontiff Knights and Fire Witches are among the few threats here, but they are scattered across the entire area.

It's vast, full of invisible enemies, and an invasion from Creighton to top it off. The saving grace for this place is seeing Siegward and having some Estus Soup, but even on the way there the player has to go through several Sewer Centipedes. Dogs, Londor Pale Shade, and more Pontiff Knights make getting to Pontiff that much more frustrating.

6 Best: Painted World Of Ariandel Is Simply Gorgeous

The Ashen One crossing a bridge in Dark Souls III's Ashes of Ariandel DLC.

Depending on when players actually visit Ariandel, this place can be a breeze or a brutal challenge. Sister Friede's boss fight more than makes up for the more frustrating parts of the DLC. The most upsetting parts of the DLC involve traversing through the environment as wolves and great arrows will be the demise of first time players.

The insect creatures at the base of Friede's residence are especially hard to deal with, but at this point in the game most players know to bring blood-moss or carry a torch. It's a beautiful area of the game and even though it's short, it features unique bosses and the only slide in Dark Souls 3.

5 Worst: Curse Is Awful & The Grand Archives Is Full Of It

Dark Souls 3 Grand Archives

If having the Crystal Sage as a normal enemy wasn't enough, the Grand Archives is crawling with annoying Thralls. The area has spectral hands protecting their library that cause curse build-up on touch. This can be remedied with pools of wax for the player to dunk their heads in, but they are all guarded by Scholars that will throw their own wax to slow down the player.

There are many things to explore in the area, so for players looking to get every item, it can take quite a while to unlock all the secrets hidden inside. Once reaching the top, however, three NPCs stand between the player and an elevator. To make things worse, the road to the Twin Princes is full of Hollows and Lothric Knights that can absolutely ruin any player's day trying to get the final shortcut.

4 Best: Untended Graves Features Some Of The More Mysterious Parts Of The Game

Dark Souls 3 Champion Gundyr

After beating Oceiros and going through the illusory wall, the Untended Graves is revealed to be a dark version of the Cemetery of Ash. The area is full of some threatening enemies but nothing seriously dangerous apart from the Grave Wardens. The giant crystal lizards can be a pain, but they won't respawn like the other enemies after death.

What makes this area so well remembered is the rematch with Gundyr and the alternate Firelink Shrine found past him. All that's left is the Shrine Maiden, a previous firekeeper's eyes, and a Blacksmith's Hammer.

3 Worst: Archdragon Peak Introduces Many Frustrating Enemies

Dark Souls 3 Archdragon Peak Teleport Cutscene

The way to get to Archdragon Peak is a great discovery for first-time players but the magic quickly fades after the first boss. The Wyvern is very underwhelming but the horde of enemies on the way to the point to plunge attack spot. The Serpent-man with the chain axe is the worst of them, but even after slaying Ancient Wyvern, there is worse yet to come.

The Rock Lizards push players off the edge and Havel can one shot with his Dragon's Tooth weapon, making the entire experience horrible to deal with. Considering Nameless King's entire fight has a horrible camera angle, it's hard to argue that this is one of the worst areas of DS3.

Dark Souls 3 Firelink Shrine

The obvious choice for the best area in Dark Souls 3 is Firelink Shrine. Full of NPCs that will be needed throughout the game, it is the one place that players will always go back to no matter what. The central hub for every Souls game has the player level up as well as exchange souls for items or spells.

Andre upgrades weapons as well as serves as a means of increasing Estus uses. There is no downside to Firelink, except of course if anyone aggros someone by accident.

1 Worst: Poison Is The Worst & Farron Keep Has The Biggest Swamp

Dark Souls 3 Farron Keep

Unless they are carrying a dagger, the swamp will slow down players extensively. This doesn't work on enemies, however, as every Ghru encountered will be just as fast as if they were on land.

The way past the swamp is through the towers the players will interact with to light three lamps that open a large gate. As if the Large Ghrus in the way weren't enough, there are also Basilisks in the swamp as well. Everything about the experience is painfully slow and there are hardly any Dark Souls fans who would disagree.
