Dark Phoenix Star Confirms the Real Reason the Film's Ending Was Reshot

Last year, the cast and crew of Dark Phoenix reassembled in Montreal to undergo extensive reshoots on the upcoming X-Men film's ending. At the time, director Simon Kinberg explained that it was an opportunity to polish the finale and give it a more grounded feel. However, returning stars James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender have cited another reason for the change in the planned ending.

The two co-stars admitted the original ending resembled another undisclosed superhero film that has since been released. Without divulging which movie caused the change, the actors observed that the new finale to Dark Phoenix is markedly different.

"The end changed a hell of a lot," revealed McAvoy in an interview with Yahoo! Movies UK. "The finale had to change. There was a lot of overlap and parallels with another superhero movie that came out... a while ago. And we had no idea that we were --"

"They had spies on set," jokingly interrupted Fassbender. "And basically stole our ideas."

Opening in theaters everywhere next month, the new ending may provide clues as to which previous superhero movie brought about the change while giving the First Class generation of X-Men one final adventure together.

Directed and written by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Holt, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film arrives June 7.
