Fox's X-Men film franchise doesn't look to be going out on a high-note, as box office projections for Simon Kinberg's Dark Phoenix continue to fall.
According Deadline, Dark Phoenix will only earn around $33.9 million over the three-day weekend, the lowest for any film in the X-Men franchise. The Wolverine currently holds the dubious position with its $53.1 million earned domestically from its 2013 opening. $33.9 million will put Dark Phoenix below Secret Life of Pets 2, which will earn approximately $46.2 million.
Universal/Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets 2 is the follow-up to 2016's widely successful The Secret Life of Pets. While the sequel is projected to beat Dark Phoenix at the box office, its ticket sales pale in comparison to the original. The sequel is looking at a 3-day opening projection of $46.2 million, while the original boasted a $104.3 million opening.
Just below Dark Phoenix, Disney's Aladdin is projected to make $24.6 million, putting it in third. Warner Bros.' Godzilla: King of the Monsters squeezes into fourth at $14.4 million.
Directed and written by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film is in theaters now.
