Dark Phoenix: Jessica Chastain's Villain Controls Jean Grey in New Image

Dark Phoenix Movie Jean Grey

A new image from Dark Phoenix, the latest X-Men film, shows Jessica Chastain's mysterious character controlling the X-Men's Jean Grey, who contains more power than she could ever know.

In the image, Chastain -- who plays an as-yet unnamed alien shapeshifter in the film -- appears to exert some kind of control over Sophie Turner's Jean Grey. Some rumors suggest Chastain's character is an amalgamation of different comic book characters, including the Marvel villain Mastermind, who played a significant role in The Dark Phoenix Saga.

In the comics, Mastermind used his ability to create realistic telepathic illusions in an attempt to seduce Jean Grey and manipulate her for his own agenda. His machinations would wear down the barriers Jean instilled within her mind and eventually allowed her to access the full potential and power of the Phoenix Force. Once unrestrained, she re-named herself the Dark Phoenix and attempted to distance herself from her Jean Grey identity, much to the chagrin of her friends and family.

Dark Phoenix takes place a decade after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse. When a rescue mission in space is interrupted by a solar flare, Jean Grey loses control of her abilities. Unpredictable and wielding incredible power, she wrestles with her own fears and insecurities, while her actions incite further tension within the X-Men, other mutants and the world at large.

Written and directed by X-franchise veteran Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film is scheduled to be released on June 7.
