Some rumors suggest Chastain's character is an amalgamation of different comic book characters, including the Marvel villain Mastermind, who played a significant role in The Dark Phoenix Saga.RELATED: X-Men: Famke Janssen Hopes Dark Phoenix Can Fix Mistakes of The Last Stand

In the comics, Mastermind used his ability to create realistic telepathic illusions in an attempt to seduce Jean Grey and manipulate her for his own agenda. His machinations would wear down the barriers Jean instilled within her mind and eventually allowed her to access the full potential and power of the Phoenix Force. Once unrestrained, she re-named herself the Dark Phoenix and attempted to distance herself from her Jean Grey identity, much to the chagrin of her friends and family.
