The latest trailer for director Simon Kinberg's Dark Phoenix hints Bishop could appear in the upcoming superhero sequel.

X-Men fans will remember that Omar Sy had a small part as Bishop in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. With that timeline erased, no one knows what happened to the character. Although Fox has managed to introduce younger versions of Marvel's mutants since Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, there hasn't been any sign of Bishop.

Bishop Dark Phoenix Easter Egg

With the new Dark Phoenix trailer confirming the long-held theory that Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique will be the movie's big casualty, there's a whole host of new Easter eggs to take note of. In the background of a scene featuring Evan Peters' Quicksilver, for instance, a truck with the name "Bishop Power" on the side drives into shot. The scene appears at the 1:20 mark when Charles Xavier and X-Men confront Jean.

A quick search of the internet reveals there are no companies called Bishop Power in America, but that could be a simple way to get around licensing. Another option is that Bishop Power is a nod to Montreal, where Dark Phoenix' filmed, after the city's street Boulevard Bishop-Power.

Notably, Dark Phoenix is a homage to the acclaimed "Dark Phoenix Saga" and Bishop has no connection to that storyline. However, with Bishop's main power being the absorption and release of energy, he would definitely come in handy in a battle with Jean and her devastating powers. Given Bishop's time travel ability, it's entirely possible someone new could play the character or that Sy could reprise his role and set up the future of the franchise.

Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film opens June 7.
