If you're an X-Men film completionist who has seen every movie released so far, you might have picked up on some familiar beats in the Dark Phoenix trailer that dropped a few days ago. A new YouTube video may just help you put your finger on why.
Using footage from the 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand, the video, which is from from the Marvel News Desk channel, dubs a two minute clip with the actual audio from the Dark Phoenix trailer, and it's startling how well the two line up with each other.
"You think you can fix me," we hear a young Jean Grey saying. The voice is that of actor Summer Fontana, who plays Jean as a child in Dark Phoenix, but the version we see in the mash-up is Haley Ramm, who played the character at the same age in The Last Stand. We're treated to more moments of simultaneous dissonance and harmony with the interwoven voice of Michael Fassbender as Erik "Magneto" Lehnsherr and the face of his earlier counterpart, Ian McKellen.
The first X-Men film was released 18 years ago, and the series has expanded and revised its timeline many times since. Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg was also the man who wrote the script for The Last Stand.
In promoting the new film, Kinberg has made it clear that he holds the Dark Phoenix storyline close to his heart, and when the execution of the plot didn't work out in The Last Stand he was determined to find a way to fix it. Now that Kinberg has taken the opportunity to have another crack at Jean Grey's story, the echoes between the film he regrets and the one he hopes will set things right can be heard clearly by fans, and the mash-up trailer connects every dot.
Dark Phoenix stars Sophie Turner as Jean Grey/Phoenix, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Nicholas Hoult as Beast and Jessica Chastain as Smith. The film is expected to be released by Fox Studios on June 7, 2019.
