Teased in the finale of 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix was originally intended to release in November 2018 but was pushed back to February, before being delayed yet again to June 2019. Little has been heard of the film since its September 2018 trailer and a slow release of official stills.

Announced before the Disney/Fox merger, Dark Phoenix was expected to release alongside another X-Men film adaptation, The New Mutants. Both films were delayed, with Fox citing a need for reshoots. The New Mutants is currently scheduled for an August 2019 release, though some rumors indicate it may release on Hulu instead.

The fourth X-Men film to spin out of X-Men: First Class' soft reboot in 2011, Dark Phoenix is the second big-screen attempt at Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s iconic X-Men story “The Dark Phoenix Saga” and the last X-Men film to be produced by 20th Century Fox prior to the Disney merger. While details of the cinematic future of the X-Men are currently unknown, Kinberg did previously reveal that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had reviewed the scripts for Dark Phoenix. Feige has since been announced to oversee the X-Men going forward.

Starring Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jessica Chastain, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Evan Peters, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, and Kodi Smit-McPhee, Dark Phoenix is scheduled for release June 7, 2019.
