Who is the vaguely familiar red Dark Multiverse Batman seen in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Dark Nights: Death Metal #1? Snyder revealed the character's identity in response to a fan on Twitter. When asked if the character is an evil incarnation of Terry McGinnis, aka Batman Beyond, Snyder confirmed the reader's suspicions. "It is. Why he’s called 'beyonder' by Bat Mage."

The character wasn't actually referred to by name in the issue, but the costume's reverse red and black color scheme certainly evokes the otherwise similar costume historically worn by DC's future Batman.

"Beyonder" is one of The Batman Who Laugh's new group of Dark Knights. Other alternate Batmen seen in the issue include the aforementioned Batmage, a Batman/Deathstroke amalgamation, and a robotic dinosaur version of Batman nicknamed B-Rex.

Death Metal #1 takes place in the aftermath of Snyder and Jorge Jimenez' Justice League #39, which saw the League disappear during its final battle with the reality-altering Perpetua. The DC Universe has been altered into a hellish, piecework landscape by Perpetua, and ruled over by The Batman Who Laughs. The reimagined reality includes alternate versions of DC's characters, as well as numerous new, dark versions of Batman himself.

Batman Beyond was first introduced in the self-titled Warner Bros. Animation series in 1999. The character was integrated into DC continuity a decade later.

Dark Nights: Death Metal #1, by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion and FCO Plascencia, is on sale now from DC.
