He was among the DC Multiverse's most powerful heroes, and then became one of its deadliest and most homicidal villains. But preliminary Dark Nights: Death Metal art shows Superboy-Prime might soon be fighting on the side of the good guys again.

Series artist Greg Capullo recently shared the art on his Instagram page. The illustration shows Superboy-Prime flanked by the Anti-Life-infected Superman on one side and Wonder Woman on the other, as she wields her Chainsaw of Truth.

In Scott Snyder and Francis Manapul's recent Dark Nights Death Metal: Trinity Crisis #1, the DC heroes ventured back into the Dark Multiverse to break the conduit of crisis energy giving the reality-shaping Perpetua her godlike powers. At the end of that issue, Wonder Woman encountered Superboy-Prime on an alternate world in the Dark Multiverse where he defeated that world's heroes during the events of Infinite Crisis.

In the actual Infinite Crisis by Geoff Johns, Phil Jimenez, George Pérez, Ivan Reis and Jerry Ordway, Superboy-Prime -- after the destruction of his world Earth-Prime in Crisis on Infinite Earths -- sought to recreate the Multiverse, making himself into the one true Superman. The Multiverse was ultimately reconstituted, but Superboy-Prime was defeated and imprisoned by the Guardians of the Universe before eventually escaping.

Superboy-Prime is likely to become a key player in Snyder and Capullo's Dark Nights: Death Metal. Issue #4 goes on sale October 13.
