Superman calls forth the heavy metal thunder in a variant cover for Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's upcoming Dark Nights: Death Metal #3.

DC tweeted the image by Doug Mahnke and colored by David Baron. Snyder later tweeted a color animated version.

The 1:25 variant shows an alternate version of the Man of Steel shredding his very own red Gibson Flying V -- with glowing red eyes to match. As befitting a rock god, the long haired, buffed up version of Superman is replete with sleeveless tank top and plenty of chains adorning him from the waist down. An audience of undead fans in the background are either enjoying the performance, or preparing to rush the stage, while the shadow of an ominous Bat-figure lurks behind.

The same incarnation of Superman briefly appeared in Dark Nights: Death Metal #1, powering the sun of Perpetua's new world, and said by Mister Miracle to have "almost succumbed to the Anti-Life."

Dark Nights: Death Metal is the sequel to Snyder and Capullo's 2017 Dark Nights: Metal series. In the new series, the DC Universe has been reimagined by the multiverse-creating Perpetua into a twisted, patchwork world combining elements of the more familiar mainstream incarnation. In Metal, the heroes of the DCU defeated Barbatos and his Dark Knights, sparing the multiverse but inadvertently freeing Perpetua in the process.

No telling if Mahnke and Baron's Man of Steel has turned evil, or if he just likes to thrash.

Dark Nights: Death Metal #2 goes on sale July 14. Issue #3 goes on sale August 11.
