DC Comics' ongoing Dark Crisis event has officially been retitled.

At the Dark Crisis-centric panel during Comic-Con International in San Diego 2022, DC officially announced the event's full title: Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths. As the new name implies, the event is officially considered a sequel to the classic Crisis on Infinite Earths series. The news was later confirmed in a press release from DC.

DC Rebrands Dark Crisis with a New Title, Making It a Crisis on Infinite Earths Sequel

Speaking about the name change, writer Joshua Williamson said, "We've kept the real name a secret from the start because we didn't want to give away what was happening in the middle of the story, with the return of the Infinite Earths."

Daniel Sampere, the artist on Dark Crisis, added, "It means so much to me to be able to be involved in creating a sequel to Crisis on Infinite Earths. It really is an honor and a dream come true for any comic book fan. Over the next few issues, fans can expect a big action explosion, with lots of epic, huge battles and a lot of emotion and surprises."

Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths begins after the apparent death of the Justice League at the hands of Pariah and the Great Darkness. In the aftermath of that event, the remaining heroes have attempted to rally their forces, though they've had to contend with such characters as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke and the Secret Society taking advantage of the chaos.

As for the future of the series, Williamson teased, "The first few issues of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths have been a mix of action and character moments and we're turning it up to 11 with the last few issues. It's going to be a roller coaster with some intense moments for DC fans, including team-ups that you won't see coming and a fight scene that is probably one of the more emotional moments I've ever written for DC."

There have been a number of tie-in books to Dark Crisis, with the event spilling over into The Flash. The announcement of the new title also came with the reveal of several new Dark Crisis tie-ins, including Dark Crisis: The Deadly Green, Dark Crisis: The Dark Army and Dark Crisis: War Zone #1.

Running from 1985 until 1986, Crisis on Infinite Earths was a major DC event written by Marv Wolfman, penciled by George Pérez, inked by Dick Giordano, Jerry Ordway and Mike DeCarlo, colored by Anthony Tollin, Tom Ziuko and Carl Gafford, and lettered by John Costanza. The landmark series saw DC's greatest heroes going up against the Anti-Monitor, a being intent on destroying the multiverse. Generally considered one of the best crossovers ever, Crisis on Infinite Earths changed the DC Universe in a big way, altering the publisher's line-up for decades.

The first two issues of Dark Crisis are available to purchase now, with the third installment slated for Aug. 2. Following the title change, DC will re-release the first three issues as Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths.
