As soon as October rolls on, Halloween lovers are dying to watch some good spooky movies. This year, the highly anticipated sequel to Hocus Pocus takes center stage as the top pick for Halloween movie nights in many households. Hocus Pocus is known for being a family-friendly dark comedy. But there are plenty of Halloween movies that aren't getting the recognition they deserve while the Sanderson Sisters hog the spotlight.

Some viewers might not be able to stomach full-on horror movies with blood and gore. Freaky is a murderous twist on the body-swapping trope that was made popular by Freaky Friday. Millie (Kathryn Newton) is a timid teenager who's often bullied because she's her high school's mascot. In Millie's town, there's an urban legend about a serial killer called The Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn), but he isn't just a legend. The Blissfield Butcher resurfaces and attacks Millie, stabbing her in the shoulder with an ancient dagger, La Dola, which causes them to switch bodies. The Blissfield Butcher flees when the police arrive, but the next day, they both learn of the body swap. The Blissfield Butcher in Millie's body takes advantage of his new innocent appearance and goes on a killing spree. Meanwhile, Millie in The Blissfield Butcher's body sets out to trap him once she learns that she has to stab him in the shoulder with the dagger by midnight or else the body swap is permanent.

Happy Death Day (2017): A Deadly Twist on Time-Loops

Happy Death Day puts a deadly twist on time loops. College student, Tree (Jessica Rothe), is murdered on the night of her birthday. She wakes up the next morning and relives the same day again, only to die again. By the third time she wakes up on the same day, she realizes she's in a time loop and sets out to find her killer and prevent her death. She does everything from barricading herself in a room to living the day differently and doing everything right, but the killer always murders her. As Tree continues to hunt for her killer, she even falls in love and makes new friends who try to help her figure out how to end the loop. Despite her new friends' minds being wiped of all information with each loop, Tree fills them in on what they have tried to do to end the loop every day until they finally find Tree's killer.

The Final Girls (2015): A Serial Killer's Ultimatum To Be Celibate or Else

The Final Girls has a star-studded cast from Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries) to Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect). This dark comedy follows a teenage girl, Max (Taissa Farmiga), who's grieving the death of her actor mother, Amanda (Malin Åckerman). Max attends a screening of a cult classic horror franchise, Camp Bloodbath, that Amanda starred in before her death. During the double feature of Camp Bloodbath 1 and 2, the movie theater is accidentally set on fire, and to escape, Max and her friends cut a hole through the screen and step through. The group finds themselves stuck inside the movie once on the other side of the screen. In a time-loop of the movie's run-time that resets every 92-minutes, they team up with the movie characters to outsmart a killer who sets out to murder anyone who tries to have sex in the movie.

Warm Bodies (2013): An Undead Love Inspired by Romeo and Juliet

Warm Bodies is a paranormal romance that takes inspiration from Romeo & Juliet. The movie is set eight years after the zombie apocalypse and follows R (Nicholas Hoult), a zombie who doesn't even remember his own name other than the first initial, can't communicate with more than a few grunts, and doesn't have a beating heart. R becomes inexplicably drawn to a human, Julie (Teresa Palmer), after his heart begins to beat for the first time since becoming a zombie upon meeting her, so he saves her from being attacked by other zombies. Initially, Julie's suspicious of R's intentions, but they soon bond over records and video games, and R slowly begins to revive back to a living human. As they start to fall in love, R gradually regains his humanity when his heart starts to beat consistently, and he starts to be able to communicate with more words. Slowly, other zombies also start to show signs of life, so R and Julie fight to put an end to the apocalypse and reunite all zombies with their humanity.
