WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Dark Ages #1, available now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel's Dark Ages will bring a version of Tony Stark who appears to be allied with Apocalypse to the forefront of a grim post-apocalyptic future in a steam-powered suit.

Tony's newest armor was teased at the end of Dark Ages #1, which revealed Iron Man in the presence of several other Marvel characters working with Apocalypse -- including the likes of She-Hulk, an older Reed Richards and Miles Morales, who has become host to a hybrid Venom/Carnage symbiote. An additional preview page showcased Iron Man's steampunk suit, designed by series artist Iban Coello. The suit appears to have a steam-propelled jet pack as well as propulsors on its gauntlets.

Dark Ages #1, written by Tom Taylor, revealed that a cosmic living machine called the Unmaker was imprisoned underneath the planet's surface and had begun to awaken. A strike force composed of Doctor Strange, Invisible Woman, the Thing, Scarlet Witch and the Vision ventured into the Earth's crust to defeat it.

The battle ended with Ben Grimm and Wanda Maximoff eradicated, Vision stuck within the Unmaker's head and Doctor Strange dead from impalement. In his final moments, however, Strange opened a portal to another dimension where electricity could not function, and this was enough to destroy the Unmaker.

With Strange dead, the portal stayed open, stopping all electricity on Earth and plunging the world into a literal dark age. An older Peter Parker finishes the issue by telling the reader that seven years have passed since that fateful day, but humanity still needs to prepare for new threats, including Apocalypse and the former heroes allied with him.

The first issue of Dark Ages is currently on sale from Marvel Comics.
