MTV Entertainment Studios' planned Daria spinoff series, Jodie, is now an animated feature film.

According to Variety, Jodie has officially been reworked into a movie after previously being developed as an animated series. Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish) remains attached to the project as the voice of Jodie Landon, a character who first appeared in the 1997-2002 MTV animated series Daria. The upcoming film follows Jodie as she graduates from college and begins interning at Firstfinity, a prestigious tech firm.

The full main cast for the Jodie film has also been revealed. Ross will be joined by Pamela Adlon (King of the Hill) as Jocelyn Light, Cole Escola (Tuca & Bertie) as Ryan, Jojo T. Gibbs (Good Trouble) as Tiffany, William Jackson Harper (The Good Place) as Mack, Zosia Mamet (The Flight Attendant) as Greta, Alex Moffat (Ralph Breaks the Internet) as Barry, Dermot Mulroney (Shameless) as Lionel, Arden Myrin (Shameless) as Britney, Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) as Sandeep, Kofi Siriboe (Awkward) as Raymond, Dulcé Sloan (The Great North) as Cas and Heléne Yorke (Masters of Sex) as Nia.

Prior to Ross taking over the role, Jodie Landon was voiced by Jessica Cydnee Jackson in Daria. That said, Jodie herself isn't the only Daria character returning for the spinoff. Harper's character, Mack, is none other than Michael "Mack" Mackenzie, Jodie's boyfriend from the original MTV series. Over the course of Daria's run, Mack was voiced by a number of different actors, including Delon Ferdinand, Paul Williams, Kevin Daniels and Amir Williams.

Furthermore, while the Variety piece spells her name as "Britney" at the time of this writing, an official description makes it clear that Myrin's character is indeed former Lawndale High head chearleader Brittany Taylor. In Daria, Brittany was voiced by Janie Meritz. However, while Gibbs is voicing a character named Tiffany, their official description suggests that this is a different character from Daria's Tiffany Blum-Deckler, voiced by Ashley Albert.

The full, official character descriptions can be found below:

  • Tracee Ellis Ross will play Jodie, the iconic character from “Daria.” Fresh from college graduation and full of ambition, Jodie heads to the big city for a prestigious internship at tech behemoth, Firstfinity.
  • Pamela Adlon will play Jocelyn Light, the trailblazing VP of Internet Affairs at FirstFinity whom Jodie reveres.
  • Cole Escola will play Ryan, Jodie’s intern friend at Firstfinity who is allergic to earnestness.
  • Jojo T. Gibbs will play Tiffany, who has swag for weeks, lives in Jodie’s building and is Cas’ ex.
  • William Jackson Harper will play Mack, Jodie’s witty and supportive high school sweetheart from the original “Daria” series.
  • Zosia Mamet will play Greta, a beachy-waved, self-proclaimed empath and Jodie’s fellow intern at Firstfinity.
  • Alex Moffat will play Barry, the overeager internship coordinator at Firstfinity who, despite being in his 50s, desperately tries to be Gen-Z cool.
  • Dermot Mulroney will play Lionel, the powerful and charming CEO of Firstfinity.
  • Arden Myrin will play Britney, the former Lawndale cheerleader from Daria turned influencer at FirstFinity.

  • Kofi Siriboe will play Raymond, Jodie’s incredibly handsome, but not-so-friendly supervisor at Firstfinity.
  • Dulcé Sloan will play Cas, Jodie’s fun-loving best friend from college and new roommate. A finance genius and social butterfly, Cas plays as hard as she grinds.
  • Helene Yorke will play Nia, Jodie’s brown-nosing, fellow intern who will do whatever it takes to get ahead.

A spinoff of Mike Judge's Beavis & Butt-Head, Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn's Daria originally aired on MTV for five seasons and two feature-length films from March 1997 to January 2002. The animated series followed the misanthropic adventures of Daria Morgendorffer (Tracy Grandstaff) after her family moved from Highland to Lawndale.

In 2018, MTV Studios began developing Daria & Jodie, a reboot series focusing on both Daria Morgendorffer and Jodie Landon. In 2019, however, the project was reworked into a solo spinoff series starring Jodie, with Grace Edwards serving as creator and Ross being cast in the lead role. In 2020, it was reported that Jodie would air on Comedy Central, which -- like MTV -- is owned by Paramount, the company formerly known as ViacomCBS.

With Jodie now being reworked into a feature film, it remains to be seen if it will stay on Comedy Central, as a move to Paramount+ seems likely. Paramount's streaming platorm has already had success with animation, most notably with its hour-long specials based on Comedy Central's South Park. Paramount+ will also be the home of MTV Studios' Beavis and Butt-Head revival, which was itself previously slated for Comedy Central.
