In two iconic runs on “Daredevil,” Frank Miller added plenty of new and revitalized characters to the Man Without Fear’s mythos. One character he created, Elektra, will make her debut in Netflix’s “Daredevil’s” second season, where she will be played by Elodie Yung. When asked about Elektra’s involvement in season two of “Daredevil” at a convention in December, Miller responded that the show “can do whatever they want, that is not her.”
Entertainment Weekly caught up with Doug Petrie, who serves as showrunner for “Daredevil” alongside Marco Ramirez, and asked him about Miller’s comments about Elektra’s upcoming live-action counterpart.
“God bless him, it’s his prerogative,” said Petrie in response to Miller. “I’m a huge fan of what he did, so the [criticism] doesn’t go both ways. I wouldn’t say, ‘What does Frank Miller know?’ I’m so inspired by him and what he achieved and I’m trying to take it further and enrich her. She’s an empowered woman with her own agency, she’s nobody’s victim.”
Frank Miller created and later killed Elektra in the comics with the understanding that Marvel would never bring her back to life. Elektra stayed dead for a number of years, but was brought back to life in the comics in 1994, 12 years after her death.
“She’s just the best bad girlfriend you can possibly have,” said Petrie, referring to the character’s history as Daredevil’s ex-lover. “She does everything wrong and attractive, she’s [Matt Murdock’s] id, the wild side. Matt is always taming his wild side. Elektra just lets it out. He’s both repulsed and deeply drawn to that.”
“Daredevil’s 13-episode second season debuts on Netflix on March 18.
