Marvel and Netflix have built up quite the roster of heroes in just three years since their first collaboration debuted, and they've also created a steady release schedule for their series. Starting with Marvel's Daredevil in 2015, these series have built up a reputation for being grittier and more grounded than other superhero shows, plus pretty damn dark -- and the upcoming shows don't appear to be changing this any time soon.
Deviating from the originally planned series-- Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Defenders -- by adding The Punisher, Marvel and Netflix have shifted their programming to allow for three series to be released each and every year, starting in 2017. The second season of Jessica Jones is set to premiere this Thursday, March 8, with Luke Cage Season 2 just announced for a June 22 release. This, going by Marvel and Netflix's recent track record, leaves a slot open for one more series in 2018. It's worth noting that Daredevil, Iron Fist and The Punisher all have new seasons on the way, but we think it's the Man without Fear whose show will release next.
So, why will Daredevil third season's occupy the end-of-2018 slot? Well the series, which stars Charlie Cox as the titular hero, started filming after Luke Cage but before Iron Fist, so it's a likely bet. Not only that, the series is arguably the most popular of all of Marvel's Netflix series, so it would make sense that they want to get a third season out there as soon as possible -- especially with the cliffhanger that The Defenders ended on.
2017 was the first year that Marvel released three shows on Netflix in a single year, and with the sheer amount of series they're juggling, one more seems bound to land this year. We believe, based on previous release dates, that Daredevil Season 3 will be released in late October/early November. Let us explain...
Last year, Iron Fist Season 1 was released on March 17, The Defenders Season 1 was made available on Aug. 18, and The Punisher followed (after a delay) on Nov. 17. Let's compare that to the release dates we already know for 2018. Jessica Jones is releasing in the same month that Iron Fistdid, Luke Cage is returning just a month prior to The Defenders' debut, and there's a nice gap around when The Punisher debuted. This, in theory, dictates that Daredevil -- should it be the series that returns next -- will indeed drop around the same time as Jon Bernthal's solo outing did last year.
We already know that the third season of Daredevil will be influenced at least somewhat by Born Again, a legendary comic arc by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, and fans can't get enough of the character, so it makes sense to strike while the iron is hot. Set photos seem to suggest Vincent D'Onofrio will make his return, which made waves on social media since he's long been hailed one of the best villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Based on the release date announcement for Luke Cage Season 2 coming so close to Jessica Jones' premiere, it's not too wild to imagine that the next series to return will be announced around June, when Luke Cage nears its Netflix return.
