Charlie Cox, star of Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again, said that his performance as Matt Murdock/Daredevil likely won't change now that he's in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In an interview with inews.co.uk, Cox was asked if the MCU's Matt Murdock would be the same character from Netflix's original Daredevil series, or an entirely different character altogether. "I don’t think it’s a different character," he said. "I just think it’s maybe a different period of his life. I don’t think my interpretation will change -- they hired the same actor. We’re saying this is a whole new… era, or variant? I haven’t read the scripts, so I don’t know. But like, it’s part of the multiverse?"

Cox's statement echoes an October interview wherein he admitted he wasn't sure if Netflix's Daredevil series would be considered canon in the MCU. "I honestly don’t know," he said, adding that he and the Born Again writers haven't "talked at length about what this current iteration will be like." He said, "Just by the fact that they're using me as an actor to play the part, it's clear that there are going to be some consistencies and there are also going to be some differences. What they are and how we integrate the two is going to be the challenge of the new show."

Charlie Cox Finally Returns to Daredevil

Cox first appeared as the Man Without Fear on Marvel's Netflix original series, Daredevil, in which he starred for three seasons until its cancellation in 2019. Cox would go on to reprise the role for a brief cameo as Matt Murdock in 2021's Marvel Studios/Sony Pictures film Spider-Man: No Way Home and returned as Daredevil in She-Hulk. His new series, Daredevil Born Again, will air 18 episodes on Disney+.

Joining Cox from the original series will be Vincent D'Onofrio, who has already reprised his Daredevil role as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in the MCU's Hawkeye series. Both Cox and D'Onofrio will appear in Disney+'s upcoming Hawkeye spinoff series, Echo, which D'Onofrio has stated will lead into the events of Born Again.

In previous interviews, Cox stated that he expects the production of Daredevil: Born Again to be a significant physical challenge, particularly with the increased episode count. "It's mad. Just in terms of shooting, physically it’s going to be a real slog and that will be a challenge in and of itself, which I’m excited about." The actor has also discussed his hopes that Born Again will feature "more CGI in the action sequences" to further "emphasize [Daredevil's] gymnastic abilities," which could previously only be shown sparingly due to budgetary constraints.

Marvel Studios' Daredevil: Born Again is slated to premiere on Disney+ in spring 2024.
