Devil's Reign #6 cover

Thus far, Devil's Reign has seen the Kingpin, mayor of New York City, consolidate his control by outlawing all superheroes and using whatever means at his disposal to achieve absolute dominion over Marvel's most vigilante-filled metropolis. These measures include utilizing the mind-control powers of the Purple Man to manipulate the populace and creating his own team of Thunderbolts -- featuring the likes of Agony, Electro, Rhino, Taskmaster and Whiplash -- to police the city in his name.

Multiple heroes have been arrested thus far in Devil's Reign, including Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, and Ben Reilly, filling in for Peter Parker as Spider-Man. To free their comrades and thwart Fisk, Daredevil, Captain America and a host of other superheroes still operating in the shadows are backing Luke Cage as mayor for the city's next election. In Devil's Reign #4, they attempted to remove Fisk from office but were forced to contend with Doctor Octopus, who made his own moves against the mayor with the help of several alternate reality versions of himself.

The ultimate showdown between Daredevil and Kingpin in Issue #6 is the culmination of several long-running story threads in writer Chip Zdarsky's transformative tenure on Daredevil, which began in 2019 and set the stage for Devil's Reign. Despite marrying Typhoid Mary and arranging a temporary truce with the Devil of Hell's Kitchen, Fisk was enraged at the end of Daredevil #36 to discover his secret files on Daredevil's true identity had been tampered with. At the start of Devil's Reign #1, Fisk confronted Matt Murdock over this, calling him a hypocrite who "puts on airs of a saint tasked with succumbing to violence...but he's truly the devil."

Daredevil and Kingpin have long been at each other's throats, and their rivalry reached an apex in Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's seminal 1986 "Born Again" story arc, which ran in the pages of Daredevil #227-231. The tale featured Kingpin attempting to utterly destroy Matt's life by blowing up his apartment, freezing his bank accounts, and causing him to temporarily lose his legal career.

Devil's Reign #6 goes on sale on April 6 from Marvel.
