Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Daredevil #23, by Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, Marcio Menyz, and VC's Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

Matt Murdock is going through a tough time right now. Daredevil is standing trial after he accidentally killed someone he was fighting, and things are looking bad. To make it worse, two of his ex-girlfriends have reappeared in his life just before the upcoming trial.

In the latest issue, Foggy Nelson revealed he called in Kirsten McDuffie to help represent Daredevil. This was a tough pill for Matt to swallow since Kirsten was an ex-girlfriend he lost following his battle with the Purple Man, thanks to the Purple Children erasing all memories of his secret identity. Matt chose not only to keep his identity a secret from Kirsten but also to break up with her to keep her safe in the future. Now, she is back, has no idea that Matt is Daredevil, and plans to help represent the hero in his court case.

With impeccable timing, another one of his exes also made a sudden reappearance in the life of the masked vigilante. Just as Daredevil is sitting on a rooftop, feeling angst like only he can, Elektra pops up on the roof by his side. Daredevil is not happy to see her and lets her know as much, telling her he is not in the mood. She makes light of him by calling him the world's stupidest superhero and accuses him of falling on his sword for helping people, which causes Daredevil to defend his reasons for turning himself in to the authorities.

Daredevil explains that he turned himself in because he felt it was the right thing to do. Elektra points out that countless lives could be lost while he is in prison serving time instead of being in the outside world, saving people and calls his actions "selfishness masquerading as selflessness." Daredevil points out that she stole billions, and she tells him that she needed the resources to build a force to battle the Hand, which is planning a resurgence stronger than ever under the guidance of a new leader.

Daredevil and Elektra

The incident that Matt is referring to happened in issue #17, when Daredevil and Elektra launched an assault on the Stromwyns, two wealthy siblings who have even more power than Wilson Fisk did at the time. They stole money from the siblings and redistributed it among the people on the streets that needed it to keep them from losing everything. However, Elektra kept a billion dollars for herself, and Matt felt betrayed by the woman he at one time loved. Since then, Daredevil has tried to find a way to get the people more money to combat the Stromwyns' influence, even asking Iron Man for help.

The reappearance of his two exes makes Matt's life interesting to say the least. While Kirsten is trying to help Daredevil become a free man, Elektra wants him to help her in her upcoming battle with the Hand. As a good faith offering, Elektra gave Daredevil information on a meeting with Wilson Fisk and several other crime lords that Daredevil broke up with the help of Spider-Man. Although Matt has made no official commitment to work with Elektra, it likely that he will feel indebted to her, granted his other ex can keep him from spending time in jail.
