Daredevil: Born Again star Charlie Cox says fans shouldn't necessarily take the show's title to mean that it will be an adaptation of the 1986 Marvel Comics story of the same name by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli.

During an interview with i, Cox stated that -- as many have assumed -- Daredevil: Born Again's title was most likely chosen to simply be an on-the-nose reference to his return as the eponymous Marvel superhero following the cancellation of his Netflix series. "I don't think anyone should read into the name as to the kind of stories that we're going to tell," the actor said.

Netflix's Daredevil Already Adapted Born Again... Sort Of

As many have also pointed out, the Netflix series Daredevil already loosely adapted Miller and Mazzucchelli's Born Again in its third and final season. To that point, however, it was far from a one-to-one adaptation. It was more so a remix, recreating key story beats from Born Again in such a way that fit in with what the Netflix's Daredevil and the crossover limited series The Defenders had already established.

Some major differences between Born Again and Daredevil Season 3 include Karen Page's role in the story, the comic's Christmastime setting and the comic's inclusion of characters like Nuke (who instead appeared in Netflix's Jessica Jones) and Captain America, just to name a few. Daredevil Season 3 integrated elements from other Marvel comics as well, most notably Daredevil: Guardian Devil by Kevin Smith, Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti. Hence, the season's prominent inclusion of the villainous Bullseye, a character who was not featured in the Born Again comic at all.

Daredevil: Born Again Is Coming to Disney+

Cox originally starred as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in all three seasons of Netflix's Daredevil from 2015 to 2018, in addition to starring as the character in The Defenders in 2017. When Daredevil was canceled shortly after the release of its third season, it was unclear if the actor would ever suit up as the Man Without Fear again. However, Cox finally returned to the role of Matt Murdock in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Around the same time, fellow Daredevil alum Vincent D'Onofrio, who portrayed main antagonist Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, reprised his role in the MCU Disney+ series Hawkeye.

Cox went on to appear as Daredevil in another Disney+ series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, with the street-level hero now sporting a yellow and red suit that hearkens back to the character's early, swashbuckling days under creators Stan Lee and Bill Everett. Moreover, at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced Daredevil: Born Again, a new Disney+ series set to premiere in 2024 as part of Phase Five of the MCU. Both Cox and D'Onofrio are attached to star in Born Again, the first season of which will consist of a whopping 18 episodes.

While no plot details for Born Again have been officially released, rumors suggest that the new series could adapt the Mayor Fisk story arc by Charles Soule and Stefano Landini, which played out within the pages of Marvel Comics' main Daredevil title from 2017 to 2018. In the meantime, Cox and D'Onofrio are expected to appear as Daredevil and Kingpin, respectively, in Marvel Studios' upcoming Disney+ series Echo, a spinoff of Hawkeye, which is slated to bow in late 2023.

Marvel Studios' Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in spring 2024.
