The upcoming Daredevil series is on Disney+ is called Daredevil: Born Again, hearkening back to a very famous Frank Miller run in the comics. Fans are already incredibly excited for the character's return. The only problem with this is that the titular "Born Again" storyline was effectively the plot of Daredevil Season 3 on Netflix.

The story only really works if Daredevil is already established, especially as Kingpin's enemy. It's possible that with Daredevil's appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and through the forthcoming series Echo, this version of Matt Murdock would be established enough in order to fall from grace and be 'born again.' Yet the marketing from Disney+ seems to hint at the Defenders Saga being connected to the proper Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The elements from the "Born Again" comics that showed up in Daredevil Season 3 were subtle. Matt was presumed dead after the events of The Defenders, so his life was mostly blown up already. The inclusion of his mother, Maggie the Nun, nursing him back to health was a direct pull, though it happened midway through. Kingpin (played by Vincent D'Onofrio) figured out who Daredevil was and sent a supervillain to kill him and his friends. The Netflix series used Bullseye; in the comics, the villain Nuke was the antagonist, but that character ended up being a part of what's now called A.K.A Jessica Jones.

If Daredevil: Born Again is looking to adapt the story of the same name, it will have to address this semi-duplication. If it's all canon, the new show must leave the elements used already behind or build on them in a way later issues of the Daredevil comic did. If it's a reboot, some of the Daredevil: Born Again episodes will need to build up Daredevil before the show can break him. For it to mean anything, viewers need to connect to and love this version of Matt.

Daredevil hides around a corner

It's possible that Daredevil: Born Again is using this famous name simply as a pun. He was first "born" under the auspices of the Marvel Television unit before Marvel Studios took over all live-action production. Bringing back both the character and the actor Charlie Cox is a kind of rebirth. It's similar to the approach taken with Spider-Man: Homecoming. Sure, the film ended at a homecoming dance, but it was also a subtle nod to Spider-Man finally being in the hands of Marvel storytellers and not just Sony Pictures.

Getting Daredevil back in any form is a gift, especially since Marvel was under no obligation to re-hire the same actors. Yet Kevin Feige and company know when they have something special, and calling the Disney+ Daredevil: Born Again seems to suggest that they know the Netflix series was unique. Whatever they choose to do, the second coming of Daredevil to TV screens will undoubtedly be compared to his first.

Daredevil: Born Again is slated to premiere in Spring 2024, while all three seasons of Daredevil are now streaming on Disney+.
