If a new rumor is to be believed, Marvel fans could see an adaptation of the "Mayor Fisk" storyline in the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again.According to industry scooper Daniel Richtman (aka DanielRPK) on his Patreon, Marvel Studios' Daredevil: Born Again is currently in the casting stage. More specifically, Richtman reports that the Disney+ series is looking to cast members of a mayoral campaign team that would work under Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, played by Vincent D'Onofrio. If accurate, this would suggest that Born Again will serve to adapt the "Mayor Fisk" arc from Marvel's Daredevil comic books.RELATED: Vincent D'Onofrio Celebrates Daredevil's Return With a Joyful Charlie Cox Photo

What Happened in Daredevil's 'Mayor Fisk' Arc?

Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime, was revealed to have been elected mayor of New York City in 2017's Daredevil #28, written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Ron Garney. The "Mayor Fisk" arc then kicked off proper in writer Soule and artist Stefano Landini's Daredevil #595, the very next issue in the series, which began using legacy numbering as part of the Marvel Legacy event. "Mayor Fisk" ultimately concluded in the landmark Daredevil #600 in 2018.

Despite being a notorious criminal, Fisk used his resources to aid innocents during the events of Secret Empire. Of course, Fisk did this not out of the kindness of his heart, but in order to win the favor of the people of New York, subsequently taking advantages of his rehabilitated image by announcing his mayoral candidacy. While Fisk's charisma did gain him substantial support, he secured his victory by rigging the election.

During the events of "Mayor Fisk," Kingpin's sworn arch-nemesis, Daredevil, became his deputy mayor under the guise of lawyer Matt Murdock. This actually culminated in Matt briefly becoming interim mayor of New York after Kingpin was severely wounded by The Hand in Daredevil #600. "Mayor Fisk" was followed up by "Mayor Murdock," which ran from Daredevil #601 to issue #605, and "The Death of Daredevil," which ran from issue #606 to issue #612. Daredevil #612 also marked Soule's final issue as the writer of the series, with a relaunch coming shortly thereafter.

Daredevil: Born Again Premieres in 2024

As announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Marvel Studios' Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in spring 2024 as part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the show's first season slated to consist of 18 episodes. Born Again stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and the aforementioned D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. Cox and D'Onofrio first played their respective characters in the Netflix series Marvel's Daredevil, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. Cox also starred as Daredevil in the 2017 Netflix limited series Marvel's The Defenders.

Following Daredevil's cancellation in 2018, Cox finally reprised his role as Matt Murdock in the 2021 MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Around that same time, D'Onofrio reprised his role as the Kingpin in the Disney+ series Hawkeye. Cox recently suited up as the Man Without Fear for the first time since 2018, sporting a new, Bill Everett-inspired Daredevil suit in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, the penultimate entry in Phase Four.

Before Born Again premieres, Cox and D'Onofrio are expected to reprise their respective roles in Marvel Studios' Disney+ series Echo, which is expected to premiere in summer 2023 and serves as a spinoff of Hawkeye. Echo sees Hawkeye's Alaqua Cox (no relation to Charlie) reprise her role as Maya Lopez/Echo, a character who originates from Marvel's Daredevil comics.

As for Born Again itself, the upcoming Disney+ series takes its name from Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli's 1986 comic Daredevil: Born Again, which was partially (and loosely) adapted in Netflix's Daredevil Season 3. Notably, Marvel Studios has yet to offer a definitive answer regarding whether or not the Netflix series is still considered canon to the MCU.

When Cox's Daredevil and D'Onofrio's Kingpin last faced off in Daredevil Season 3, the former managed to successfully return his nemesis to prison after FBI agent Ray Nadeem (Jay Ali) exposed Kingpin's criminal dealings. By the events of Hawkeye, however, Fisk was walking a free man once again. Still, a lot very well could have changed since the events of Netflix's Daredevil, especially in the aftermath of the Blip.

"You know [Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige] has been very clear about it being Season 1, so not a Season 4," Cox recently said of Born Again. "So, it's a whole new deal. Um, and in a way, what's great about that is that we potentially get to tell some of the stories over and over again. In the same way that they do in the comics you know every now and again they stop back at the beginning of Murdock's journey as a little boy and they tell the whole origin story again. So maybe we'll get to do that. I don't know."
