Daniel Brühl's Zemo played an integral role in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, where he managed to tear the Avengers apart from the inside. However, despite the film seemingly setting him up for future appearances, the character has yet to be seen since, leaving many to wonder if there are currently any plans in place for Zemo to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, in an interview to promote his latest film, 7 Days in Entebbe, the actor has teased Zemo's potential future and his eagerness to return to the role.
We last saw Zemo at the end of Captain America: Civil War, when he was taken into custody after it was revealed that he was responsible for the bombing at the Vienna International Centre that resulted in the death of King T'Chaka. Unfortunately, since then, the villain hasn't been seen in the MCU. That could soon be changing, however, as in a recent interview with ScreenRant, Brühl revealed that he sees Zemo escaping prison "somehow."
"Well I hope so. I always say they didn’t kill me, which is always a good sign. As you can imagine, it’s extremely secretive. Even if I would know something, I would probably not be allowed to tell you. But again, I was very glad about the fact that he [did] not kill himself and [was] stopped by Black Panther and that he ends up in a prison. But I’m pretty sure he’s going to get out of that prison somehow."
Of course, as Brühl notes, Zemo has fared better than most Marvel villains and is still very much alive and able to cause plenty more trouble for the Avengers. However, with Earth's mightiest heroes currently turning their attention to the Mad Titan, Thanos, it may still be some time before Zemo returns to the big screen to wreak havoc upon our heroes.
Brühl can currently be seen in TNT's The Alienest which airs Monday nights.
