Tribe Nine, the new anime created by the staff behind the Danganronpa video game series, will make its premiere on Jan. 10.

The sports/battle anime series' premiere was announced by Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. The show is just one branch of the Tribe Nine franchise, which will also include a mobile game, an original manga and a Webtoon. The new series is the latest creation from Kazutaka Kodaka, who is best known for leading the development of the cult-classic Danganronpa series of video games. Kodaka will once again be joined by Danganronpa's character designer, Rui Komatsuzaki, as well as composer Masafumi Takada. The show is being produced as a co-production between Kodaka's new studio, Too Kyo Games, mobile game publisher Akatsuki Inc., Tokyo Revengers animation studio Liden Films, and anime distributor Funimation. The series will be released through Funimation's streaming service internationally.

Tribe Nine is set in a colorful but post-apocalyptic future in the Tokyo-inspired fictional city of Neo Too Kyo. Gangs vie for control of the city by competing against each other in a new, more violent version of baseball that features bats, mitts and other equipment that can also transform into futuristic weapons. The show's producers have released the anime's opening title sequence to YouTube, which provides a preview of the show's unique visual style and a look at the various gangs that will do battle on the baseball diamond once the show premieres.

The series features an all-star cast of voice actors, which is headlined by Akira Ishida, who anime fans may know as the voice of Kaworu Nagisa from Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Shun Horie, who plays Aether in Genshin Impact. The cast also features Chiharu Sawashiro (Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway), Mai Fuchigami (Persona 5), Mutsumi Tamura (13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim), Shouya Chiba (Visual Prison), Hiroshi Naka (One Piece), and Junichi Sawabe (Yuri!! on Ice).

The new franchise is easily the biggest project that Too Kyo Games has attempted. The company was founded by Kodaka and several other key members of the Danganronpa development team after they left developer Spike Chunsoft following the release of that series' third entry in 2017. Too Kyo Games has released two games previously, the visual novel Death Come True and the adventure/platformer hybrid World's End Club, both of which were released in 2020 to mixed reviews. Spike Chunsoft recently re-released all 3 of the mainline Danganronpa games for the Nintendo Switch in a compilation that also included Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp, a new party game starring the characters from the series.
