WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Lucifer Season 6, streaming now on Netflix.

Dan Espinoza started Lucifer as a morally questionable police officer married to Chloe Decker. He and Lucifer were at odds when they first met, but they eventually grew a mutual understanding and even bonded on occasion. While Dan's past was behind him and he started to become a better person, Season 5B saw Dan die, a moment that emotionally broke his loved ones, including Lucifer. However, Season 6 reintroduced Dan as a citizen of Hell on a search to rid himself of his guilt and make the journey up to Heaven. But, he was not allowed to journey up as he was still guilt-ridden by something he did not know.

Dan tried his best to figure out what was ailing him. He had spent thousands of years in Hell going over everything that happened in his life, forgiving himself for the moments that were not his fault and making peace with those that were. While he hoped this would be enough, he was still trapped in Hell, with Lucifer not knowing how to help. It wasn't until Lucifer's daughter from the future, Rory, came into the picture that Dan's journey to Heaven got a bit closer when Rory brought his soul back to the mortal plane. Unfortunately, since his body was cremated, he returned to Earth as a ghost, intangible to all objects and invisible to all non-Celestial beings.

Dan spent a majority of Season 6 trying to understand what part of him still feels guilty and was preventing him from ascending. During Lucifer's penultimate episode, Dan tried to stop his murderer, Vincent Le Mec, from escaping prison but failed as there was nothing he could do. Le Mec stopped at a gas station to pick up some items and the clerk recognized him as the escaped convict. The clerk pulled a gun on Le Mec, which the trained assassin stole and aimed at the clerk. With no time to lose, Dan tried to tackle Le Mec and ended up possessing him, an ability he did not know he had.

Dan made his way to Lucifer, where he asked the Devil for help with this situation. Lucifer was unable to help but gave Dan a piece of advice: spend any moments he has on Earth with the people he loves as it is not the time he has left, but the people he spends it with that make life worth living. Dan took this advice and went to visit his daughter, Trixie. Dan convinced Trixie that he was a "friend of her father's" and told her how much her dad loves her. Dan also told Trixie how sorry he was that he left when he did and how ashamed he was that he could not be a good role model to her. Trixie pushed back "Le Mec's" words, telling him how proud she was of her father and how she knows he's proud of her. With that, a white light shone on Dan, calling him to the Silver City.

Dan's journey throughout Lucifer was a difficult one, even before he was part of the Celestial in-crowd. He suffered and lost more than most, but he was rewarded in Heaven as the closing moments of the series show Dan sitting on a restaurant patio with Charlotte Richards by his side, being served his favorite meal in all of creation -- pudding.

To see Dan's journey, all six seasons of Lucifer are streaming now on Netflix.
