Former DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio, who oversaw the "New 52" reboot and "Rebirth" relaunch, said he has problems with the Wally West version of the Flash because "he was never his own character."

DiDido told GamesRadar+ that the West version of the Flash was fundamentally flawed because "his origin was always dependent on Barry Allen," his predecessor in the guise, as well as his uncle.

"He was always going to be subservient to Barry in some way because his origin was determined by Barry." West's origin, in The Flash #110 (January 1960), is a direct copy of Allen's. They both got struck by lightning while being doused with multiple chemicals. West's uniform was even a copy of Allen's until he got a red and yellow outfit in The Flash #135 (March 1963).

The Barry Allen Flash was killed in Crisis on Infinite Earths #8 (November 1985), but DiDio said he thought it best to return him to the DC Universe. "I always felt, as a true Flash, if we were trying to get to the simplest form with regards to media and things like that, we had to go back to Barry because the story starts with him." Barry Allen was revived in the 2009 miniseries The Flash: Rebirth.
