The first season of HBO's Watchmen is over, but showrunner Damon Lindelof has said he would return for a second, should the series be renewed.

Lindelof has previously said he wouldn't be back, but when asked who he might recommend in his stead, Lindelof told Variety on Monday he wouldn't rule out his own return. First, though, he mused whether the show itself would continue.

"We’re asking the question, 'Should there be another season of Watchmen?,'" Lindelof said. "And if there should be another season, what would it be? I’m not saying I don’t want to do it, or it shouldn’t exist. I’m just saying, 'Boy, every idea that I had went into this season of Watchmen.'”

"I actually do agree with HBO that this should be a continuing series," Lindelof added. "Maybe it’ll continue in a year or two, maybe they’ll continue it in four years or whatever, but I want to see more Watchmen.”

"I do think that there has to be space for private, personal conversations that happen between HBO and I. My guess is some of those conversations are going to start happening this week," Lindelof said.

Developed by Damon Lindelof, HBO's Watchmen stars Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Jean Smart, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Tom Mison, James Wolk, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith and Adelynn Spoon.
