With the midseason finale just around the corner, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." star Brett Dalton has joined his castmates' chorus in teasing a big, game changing episode.

Dalton's Grant Ward has come a long way since he was outed as a mole in Director Coulson's premiere S.H.I.E.L.D. team. Ward has steadily risen through the ranks of Hydra, surpassing his mentors and becoming the leader of his own small faction. However, now that he's met Powers Boothe's Gideon Malick, his whole world is about to change.

In a discussion with CBR News about his role in the Marvel series' midseason finale, Dalton explained how Malick has influenced his character, why he loves working with Iain De Caestecker, and what more fans should expect in "Maveth."

CBR News: This episode is kind of a big deal for Grant Ward. What would you like your fans to know going in?

Brett Dalton: [Laughs] That's a good question! More globally, about the show, things will never be the same. Much like The Doors, they've broken on through to the other side, at least with the portal, and some crazy things happen that can't un-happen.

It didn't take much for Gideon Malick to convince Ward to go through the portal. How would you describe his mindset following this rather risky decision?

I think episode 9 was a big episode for Ward. The last couple [episodes], Malick has really been giving him an education about Hydra's centuries-long history. It's changed Ward's perspective on a lot of things. His decision to go through the portal rather than enact revenge on Coulson is a big deal right there. For the first time, I think Ward was able to see the whole chessboard rather than just try to take down the king. That was a big step for him, as it's getting him to expand his views on his goals and for him to be more inclusive rather than so narrow. It's a big deal!

Last week, Ward and Fitz headed off into the portal together. What was it like for you to work closely with Iain De Caestecker again?

Well, I love Iain. He's one of my best friends in real life, so any time we get a chance to work together is great, because both of us have an understanding -- you know, this is not talking about character-wise, but personal actor-wise. I think both of us have a similar process and are there to work. I'm a huge fan of his work, anyway. It's a really good thing where it feels like you're in the ring with someone who can really throw the punch back. It's pretty fantastic. I love working with him. We dance well together.

Starring Clark Gregg, Chloe Bennet and Ming-Na Wen, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." airs Tuesdays at 9 pm EST on ABC.
