The X-Men have found themselves in many interesting moral quandaries during the era of Krakoa, with a reliance on politics and power plays coming to define the typically heroic group. But the conflict between hope and pragmatism might become a more pressing concern given Cyclops' latest actions.
In an act of nobility, the X-Men's leader, Cyclops, may have set the stage for his dismissal from his own team in X-Men #12 (by Gerry Duggan, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, and VC's Clayton Cowles). In making a moral decision to reveal mutant resurrection to the world, he could have possibly turned the Quiet Council and the rest of Krakoa against himself before the X-Men's next election.
X-Men #12 focuses on multiple battles on various fronts, with the X-Men contending with a whole host of problems. But while they are for the most part successful in their efforts, including dismantling Cordyceps Jones' plans and discovering that Doctor Stasis is really another version of Mister Sinister, one lingering mistake has been haunting Cyclops. One of the loose threads in the current volume of X-Men has been reporter Ben Urich's investigation into the possibility that the X-Men had perfected resurrection. Uncovering the truth and giving Cyclops a heads-up of his plans to publish it, the information was wiped from Ben's mind by Synch out of fear of what could happen to mutants if those details became public knowledge.
After discussing it with Cyclops though, the two decide it's time to come clean. They return all of Urich's research and while they don't restore his exact memories they gave him an interview to discuss resurrection. Although Cyclops refuses to explain the full extent of mutant technology, he makes it clear that it's something Krakoa has discovered and it only works for mutants. The news is quickly released to the world, revealing one of Krakoa's biggest secrets and potentially giving anti-mutant forces a new reason to try and rally support for their cruel cause.
Cyclops is firmly aware that the decision to reveal the truth to Urich without consulting the Quiet Council will likely enrage the mutant nation's governing body. This could be construed as revealing state secrets to foreign and potentially adversarial nations. While the Quiet Council may not do anything to the hero publicly, they could take more subtle actions against him, such as trying to force him out of the X-Men. Even if they don't, they could try to instead use their influence to convince the population of Krakoa that Cyclops isn't fit for leadership at all and to vote him off the team in the upcoming Hellfire Gala elections.
Cyclops admits that his expulsion is very much a possibility. Although he hopes that the mutants will understand why he did what he did and will continue to support him as a representative of Krakoa. All of this comes at a dangerous time for the mutant nation, as various foes have been angling to strike the X-Men and their allies. The more divided they are, the more likely they are to fall under the weight of such an assault. The X-Men being out of sync with the Quiet Council -- especially if Cyclops remains on the team, could further isolate the different branches of the nation and leave them exposed to the kind of assault that Orchis has been planning since the beginning of "Dawn of X". Even though this isn't the first time Cyclops has gone rogue against the leaders of the mutant community, given his actions post-Avengers vs. X-Men, this dispute could still have far more lasting consequences for the future of the mutant nation.
