The Story of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Animated by Studio Trigger and based on the game Cyberpunk 2077, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an original work set in Night City, a dystopia characterized by its corruption, cybernetic addiction and gang violence. The story follows a young street kid named David Martinez who decides to be an "Edgerunner" after his mother dies in a drive-by shooting, leaving him with only a stolen military-grade Sandevistan spine cyberware. Once implanted, it enhances David's speed, strength and reflexes for a short period of time but at the cost of raising his risk of succumbing to cyberpsychosis. The anime received an outpouring of praise for its visual effects and design.

Before its launch, Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most highly anticipated games to be released. However, it was hit with negative reviews as the game was plagued with numerous bug and performance issues, especially in the console versions. The enormous success of the anime brought about a resurgence to the game, beating out The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with its record of 136,724 concurrent players on Steam.

There are no plans for a second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as the creators intended it to be a standalone series. While Season 2 is out of the question, Satoru Honma, CD Projekt Red's community manager, said, "I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future."

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is available to stream on Netflix.
