Cyberpunk: Edgerunners premiered on Netflix on Sept. 13 with 10 episodes and serves as a prequel to the game, taking place around a year before Cyberpunk 2077. The story takes place in the future, in a city where inhabitants obsess over technology and cybernetic implants, with a divide between the haves and have-nots. It follows David Martinez, a Latinx teenager who attends the prestigious Arasaka Academy but finds himself often bullied due to his family’s financial circumstances. After the death of his mother, David is at a loss for what to do -- until he finds a military-grade Sandevistan implant that grants the user superhuman speed, strength and reflexes. He chances upon the mysterious Lucy when he catches her stealing chips from people, and she introduces them to her crew: a group of mercenaries known as the Edgerunners. As the two get to know each other, David makes Lucy a promise to make her dream of seeing the moon come true.

Edgerunners’ Popularity Led to a Resurgence of Interest in the Game

Released in December 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most highly-anticipated games to come out, but when it did, it quickly became one of the biggest disappointing releases due to its buggy launch. After the anime's release, the game saw a huge surge in popularity. Produced by Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill and Promare) and CD Projekt, the anime adaptation garnered significant praise for its visual effects and animation. Michael Pondsmith, the creator of the Cyberpunk role-playing game, and video game director Hideo Kojima both gave the anime their stamps of approval with Pondsmith saying, "EDGERUNERS. F***ING NAILED IT. It's like seeing my brain in a big screen anime."

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is currently streaming on Netflix.
