Netflix has announced the release date for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners with a flashy, action-packed trailer.

The upcoming animated series is based on Mike Pondsmith's popular role-playing video game franchise Cyberpunk, with Edgerunners being a spin-off title of the most recent entry in the series, Cyberpunk 2077, which was developed by CD PROJEKT RED. The series will be set in the same world as that game, but feature a new story and a new cast of characters. The trailer, which was released alongside the show's Sept. 13 release date announcement, opens with main characters David Martinez and Lucy discussing David's mother and his wishes for the future. Shortly afterward, it devolves into a rapid-fire series of gunfights, explosions, and sexual imagery. Check out the new, NSFW trailer alongside a poster featuring Lucy and a batch of images from the upcoming episodes.

The story for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners revolves primarily around Lucy, who works as a "netrunner" for a group of mercenaries led by a man named Maine. Within the Cyberpunk universe, netrunners are hackers that utilize brain-computer interface implants to traverse the depths of the internet, hack into computer systems and sell information to whoever is willing to pay for it. Lucy, who is highly-sought after for her technical skills, wishes to escape Night City, and by doing so leave behind her dark and dangerous past.

Studio Trigger Is Back

The series is being animated by the highly acclaimed Studio Trigger (Little Witch Academia, BNA: Brand New Animal) and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, known for their work on Gurren Lagann and Kill La Kill. CD PROJEKT RED has reportedly been working on the series since 2018 and will be overseeing Production, with Rafal Jaki (Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt) serving as both Showrunner and Executive Producer, and Satoru Homma, Bartosz Sztybor and Saya Elder working as producers.
