While modders have already been working on re-shades and fixes for Cyberpunk 2077, there haven’t been any major ones like we’ve seen with the Witcher 3, such as the random monster encounter mod or these ponies. This was mainly due to the fact that the REDengine, created and used by CD Projekt Red, is difficult to mod without knowledge of how it works.

However, it looks like that's all about to change. CD Projekt Red recently released modding support tools for the community to work its magic on Cyberpunk 2077 – just like the Witcher 3.

Of course, it’s not some magic tool that anyone can pick up and use, but files and data can be read to better understand the game files and engine. Although, in the right hands, the modding community may come up with a core modding tool to make life easier and result in a plethora of customization options, which is what usually happens. CDPR’s support tools should definitely get the modding community rolling as there is plenty to add to this sprawling game.

This mod support comes much sooner than it did for the Witcher 3, likely because of the outcry about removed features and the numerous bug fixes needing to be done before free DLC and other content will be released. If CDPR isn’t currently working on new features for the game currently, at least the modding community will be on it in the meantime. This release was fairly low-key, with no information on CDPR or Cyberpunk 2077's News pages or updates. Perhaps we’ll finally have an actual law system instead of a free-for-all shooting up the streets of Night City, although it may take some time to get there.

These tools mean we may finally see some great content for Cyberpunk 2077 from the modding community. There’s a lot of love needed in the character customization department, and if the NPC looks are any indication, there’s plenty there to work with. Speaking of love, there are already quite a few ‘one night’ and romance mods out there that are sure to be improved and more likely to come. There are many new avenues about to open up in Night City and mostly for the better – thanks to more fixes. While the REDengine 3 and 4 aren’t as extensive as Bethesda’s Creation Engine when it comes to mod support, at least CDPR is giving players and creators the ability to add their own flair to Cyberpunk 2077. Hopefully, this will tide players over until the DLC releases later this year.
