With Cyberpunk 2077's release date delayed yet again, likely preventing the open-world RPG game from qualifying for 2020's Game of the Year nominations, developer CD Projekt Red has become the target of numerous online harassments and death threats.

CD Projekt Senior Game Designer Andrezej Zawadzki released a handful of threatening posts -- presumably sent as direct messages on Twitter -- whose rhetoric included such comments as "release the game or your finished," "Release cyberpunk or you and your family will be persecuted" and “I will burn you alive if you don’t release the game." In his response, Zawadzki called these posts "one of the mildest messages some of us got. There were far, FAR worse. Every single one is being reported. We will not let it go through. Do not treat it lightly. Do not ignore it. It is serious."

Among those providing support to Zawadzki included God of War developer Cory Barlog, who called the harassment posts "so f***ed" and wrote, "DO. NOT. F*@#ING. DO. THIS. PEOPLE. AS A COMMUNITY, WE MUST BE BETTER."

Despite being one of 2020's most anticipated video games, Cyberpunk 2077 has suffered numerous delays throughout the year. Initially set for an April 16 release, the game was first pushed back to Sept. 17 and then Nov. 19 before a recent Twitter statement announced that it was moved yet again to a Dec. 10 release date. In its statement, CD Projekt Red noted that its development team is currently attempting to test nine different versions of Cyberpunk for multiple current and next-gen hardware systems, as the game will release alongside Microsoft and Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Though the game has been certified for release (i.e. "going gold"), the statement noted that "many improvements are being made which will then be distributed via a Day 0 patch. This is the time period we undercalculated."
