Interesting revelations about Cyberpunk 2077's character creation have come up since the ESRB rating provided new information. The character creator as a whole was promised to be in-depth back at E3 2019 and information has been released in a slow drip since -- but here's what's known so far.

To start, players are brought to Life Path where they will choose backstory options. These operate like Dragon Age: Origins’ backstories, where characters get different dialogue choices and personality aspects. Currently there are three categories: ‘Nomad,’ ‘Street Kid,’ or ‘Corporate.’ They’re fairly straightforward and may also dictate if Keanu Reeves is the player's partner, if screenshots are to be believed.

Next are Key Life events and options are ‘Death of a Sibling,’ ‘Ran Away From Home,’ and ‘First Big Kill.’ The final category asks, Why Night City? This seems like it will further dictate V’s attitude to their surroundings. Selections include: ‘Unfinished Business,’ ‘Ex-Lover in Town,’ or ‘Something to Prove.’

From there, players will be given the option of a female or male V with alterations made afterward. This may be where the genital and other sex traits are customized, since Cyberpunk 2077's character creator starts with two basic forms. Players then have the option to alter their appearance, like eyes, nose, hair styles and so on.

There are some cool features for the Cyberpunk universe like cybernetic wiring and possibly glowing tattoos. So far it doesn’t look like there are custom sliders, only presets to choose from. Skin tone seems to work on a slider, while colors for hair and eyes have palette selections. It’s kind of limited compared to games like Phantasy Star Online 2 where anything goes, but this may change in the final release. The final steps of appearance are separate from this stage and include things like clothing or piercings.

After creating the basic character in Cyberpunk 2077, it's onto the stats and possibly first perks. Stats are taken from the same tabletop game which inspired Cyberpunk 2077, but with some alterations. On top of typical stats there are Cool, Reflex and Technical. Cool acts sort of like charisma, while Reflex probably acts like dexterity and Technical has to do with things like crafting and probably fixing things for side quests. Perks are accessed through these stats, just like in Fallout 4, while abilities are gained from cybernetics.

Appearances aren’t just something for players to look at in Cyberpunk, they also affect the world. Clothing can be changed throughout the game and acts as armor, but also affects V’s Street Cred. This can lead to new quests and NPCs will react to what V is wearing, which opens up the possibility to wear a disguise to get into places or blend into a crowd for information. So even if players don’t get to see their V all the time, their style will still have an impact on the game, just like the choices they make.
