THE STORY SO FAR

The Flash Season 6 CW

The Flash's sixth season ended on a major cliffhanger, as Barry and Team Flash prepared to infiltrate the Mirrorverse to rescue Iris. Little did they know, however, that Iris has recently disappeared to parts unknown. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic halting production in March 2020, the season stopped short at 19 episodes.

Showrunner Eric Wallace confirmed that the intended last three episodes of Season 6 will serve as the first three episodes of Season 7. He believes the choice makes the new season stronger because "it's forcing us to look at these two separate things — which is the end of Eva [McCulloch's] story and the beginning of the next villain's story and how she relates to Barry and Iris." The first part of Season 7 should seemingly pick up right with Barry's search for Iris in the Mirrorverse, before segueing into bringing in a new Big Bad.

An official synopsis for the Season 7 premiere says, "Flash will ultimately defeat Mirror Master. But in doing so, he'll also unleash an even more powerful and devastating threat on Central City: one that threatens to tear his team—and his marriage—apart." That threat is most likely Godspeed. After bothering Team Flash with several clones throughout the season, Wallace indicates that the evil speedster is coming--and soon.

TRAILER

The trailer for season 7 of The Flash debuted during the show's panel at DC FanDome. It utilizes footage originally intended for the end of season 6, as Mirror Master rises to power in Central City while Barry desperately searches for a way to restore his power and save his wife from the MirrorVerse.

FILMING

Filming on Season 7 technically started back in March 2020, with production on what was at the time going to be Season 6, Episode 20. That episode -- which was about 90% filmed by the time things shut down -- will serve as the Season 7 premiere. Production began on October 9, 2020, and was temporarily halted in November due to a positive COVID-19 test. Filming resumed in mid-December, and is expected to conclude on May 19, 2021.

CAST AND CREW

It's assumed series regulars Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/The Flash), Candice Patton (Iris West-Allen), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/Frost), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon/Vibe), Danielle Nicolet (Cecile Horton) and Jesse L. Martin (Joe West) will continue their roles into Season 7. It's also expected Tom Cavanagh will once again return, though it remains to be seen which (or how many) doppelgangers of Harrison Wells he'll play this time around. Brandon McKnight (Chester P. Runk) and Kayla Compton (Allegra Garcia) were also upgraded to series regulars.

The off-season has been eventful for Hartley Sawyer and his character Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man. In June, it was discovered that Sawyer had made a series of misogynistic and racist tweets on his Twitter account from 2011 to 2014. In response, Wallace and The CW fired Sawyer, indicating he would not be returning for Season 7. Wallace then released a subsequent statement about his decision, saying, "I will continue to find Black and Brown writers, directors, actors and producers of all genders to help tell Flash stories. Their stories are part of the American narrative, too, and must be heard. And the more you hear and see us, the more you will begin to recognize one simple fact: We're human beings too."

With Sawyer is confirmed to be out of the Arrowverse, the question is what the show will do with Dibny. Wallace told Entertainment Weekly, "We're going to treat it like we would if we were writing a comic book graphic novel. We're giving the Elongated Man a bit of a rest for while. But we will leave the door open." He went on to say that Dibny will be recast for the first part of season 7, which will serve to conclude Sue Dearborn's murder mystery cliffhanger, before being retired from the show.

Additionally, David Ramsey will be guest starring this season, reprising his Arrow role of John Diggle. Shadowhunters' John Cor will play Mark Stevens/Chillblaine for Season 7.
