Naomi is based on the DC superhero created by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell. The titular character is described as an effortlessly cool and confident high school student who's also adopted, popular and embraces the nerdy aspects of her personality. When a supernatural event takes place, it leads Naomi to discover her secret super-powers and sets her on the path to pursue her hidden destiny.

Walfall was officially cast as Naomi's lead in March, along with three other recurring character on the series: Alexander Wraith as Dee, the local tattoo parlor owner, Cranston Johnson as Zumbado, the mysterious owner of a local used car lot and Camila Moreno as Lourde, a young woman who shares in Naomi's love of comics and has a crush on her.

Following that, 7th Heaven alum Bary Watson was announced as Naomi's father Greg, a military veteran working at the local base. Her mother will be played by Mouzam Makkar, a linguistics teacher working at the same base.

Recently, DuVernay's other DC project, the New Gods movie with writer Tom King, was officially canceled by Warner Bros. Both DuVernay and King addressed the news, with DuVernay writing to King, "I'm upset that the saga of Barda, Scott, Granny, Highfather and The Furies ends this way. Diving into Kirby's Fourth World was the adventure of a lifetime. That can't be taken away. Thank you for your friendship. And remember... [Darkseid is]."

King returned the compliment by saying he's "incredibly proud of the work we did." While Warner Bros. and DC left the door open to revisit New Gods in the future, the studio said that it looks forward to a continued partnership with DuVernay and King on other DC Comics adaptations.

Naomi stars Kaci Walfall, Alexander Wraith, Cranston Johnson and Camila Moreno. A release date for the series has not been announced.
