Amid the flurry of invading Nazis and surprise cameos in the first parts of the Arrowverse crossover, "Crisis on Earth-X," it was easy to miss the six-second promo for The CW's upcoming superhero drama Black Lightning. While the blink-and-you'll-miss-it teaser doesn't offer any insight into the Season 1 storyline, it does debut a new series logo.
The TV spot depicts star Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce standing in the rain beneath a street lamp. "People out there need me," he says in voiceover as his eyes glow and the air crackles with the sound of electricity. "Black Lightning is back!" It closes with the new logo, marked by the DC Comics hero's signature yellow lightning bolt.
Black Lightning centers on Jefferson Pierce, the father of two daughters and the principal of a charter high school that doubles a safe haven for young people in a neighborhood plagued by gang violence. However, Pierce has a secret: Until nine years ago, he fought to keep his hometown safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning, until he left that life behind when he realized the toll it was taking on his family. Thinking his crime-fighting days are long behind him, he's forced to return as Black Lightning when those he cares about end up in the cross hairs on the local gang The One Hundred.
Premiering Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Black Lightning stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, China Anne McClain as Jennifer Pierce, Nafessa Williams as Anissa Pierce, Christine Adams as Lynn Pierce, James Remar as Peter Gambi, Damon Gupton as Henderson, Marvin “Krondon” Jones III as Tobias Whale and Chantal Thuy as Grace Choi.
