Writer Cullen Bunn is teaming with over a dozen artists for Deepest Catacombs, a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired fantasy comic that harkens back to the franchise's one-page advertisements.

Deepest Catacombs will be released online starting the week of Aug. 9 as one-page featurettes, with a different artist illustrating each page. Bunn will also make Deepest Catacombs available to read free through his Patreon page.

Writer Cullen Bunn has announced a new fantasy adventure comic book project titled DEEPEST CATACOMBS. The story, which will be drawn by dozens of artists, is a nod to one-page advertisements for the Dungeons and Dragons role-playing game that appeared in comic books in the 80s.

"When I was a kid," said Bunn, "I absolutely loved the D&D ads that ran in my favorite comics. These were one-page comic strips that introduced a band of heroes -- Grimslade, Valerius, Saren, and Indel -- who were adventuring into a dungeon in search of treasure. They met up with werewolves and goblins and green slime and dragons. The story continued from strip to strip, and I was always eager to see what would come next. Sometimes, I was more excited about the ads than the actual comics!"

This interest in those old advertisements led Bunn to develop a plan for DEEPEST CATACOMBS. This tale of epic fantasy will be released online in one-page installments. Each installment will be drawn by a different artist -- some long-established pros, some up-and-coming new talent. Read together, the installments will present a complete tale, but each page will read like an advertisement for the DEEPEST CATACOMBS role-playing game -- a game that never existed! The pages will be posted online for all to enjoy.

"But this is more than an exercise in nostalgia," said Bunn. "Yes, it was my love of the game I played so much in my youth that inspired the project, but gaming has changed a lot over the years. And so has storytelling. The comics are written as advertisements, which presented a delightful challenge, and they feature plenty of action and traps and bizarre monsters, but I also wanted the characters to be fun and engaging. They have a deep backstory that will be revealed over time. I wanted the readers to care about them."

The heroes of DEEPEST CATACOMBS include Randall, the would-be knight; Kezira, the mage; Annalynn, the far-ranger; Fingerbones, the goblin thief; and Chops, Kezira’s pig familiar.

Art for the first two installments (and the "cover" image And character designs) was provided by A.C. Zamudio and Nick Zamudio. Other installments will be illustrated by a host of surprise artists. The first wave of the project will run 24 pages, though Bunn is already planning a second wave.

The story will be released online through Bunn's Patreon page. It will be open to the public. There will be behind-the-scenes material such as character and creature designs and scripts, as well as role-playing game content for the 5th Edition of Dungeons and Dragons, released to patrons only.

"I want everyone to be able to read these stories," said Bunn. "I also know that a lot of process junkies will enjoy seeing the background materials. If you’re a gamer, you’ll have the chance to play these characters, to use these monsters in your campaigns, to walk the halls of the dastardly dungeons you see in the comics!"

Bunn is working with frequent collaborator Anton Kromoff of Old Magic Gaming to release these stories. Kromoff is doing design work on the project, creating the logo, setting up page templates, and lettering the stories. He is also working with Bunn and some of the other creators to develop gaming content set in the world of Deepest Catacombs.

The first installments of DEEPEST CATACOMBS go live the week of August 9 - 15 on Bunn’s patreon at www.patreon.com/cullenbunn.
