A war between gods and humans is brewing in Onyx Equinox.

Released by Crunchyroll, the trailer for the Latinx anime series introduces its main protagonist, Izel, a young Aztec boy who embarks on an action-packed adventure through Mesoamerica to save humanity from an oncoming apocalypse.

Spared from death by the gods and armed with a blood-activated dagger, Izel is chosen to prove that his kin is worth saving as "humanity's champion." In the trailer, monsters rise from below the earth's surface to wreak apocalyptic havoc on Mesoamerican communities, while blood flows from temple steps. Not much in terms of further plot details are given away by the lusciously animated teaser, save for the fact that, in this world, humanity has already been "remade" four times before. Without Izel's intervention, that fate could be repeated a fifth.

Created by Sofia Alexander and produced by Crunchyroll Studios Production, Onyx Equinox joins In/Spectre, Tower of God and The God of High School as part of the anime brand's Originals slate of programming.

The series will premiere on Crunchyroll this summer but, as of yet, no release date has been announced.
